LT1 with T56 to automatic questions
Hello,
I've got an 84 camaro that I purchased with a 97 trans am drive train swapped in it. I mainly wanted it for the T56 to put into my 86. But since the car without the transmission hasn't sold I've been toying with the idea of rebuilding the LT1 motor for the experience of rebuilding a motor, and putting an automatic transmission back in it.
Now I don't know a lot about the car, atm I'm theorizing on whether it is worth the trouble or not. The LT1 computer core is in there, but the wiring is hacked together, no proper harnesses was used. But it had a T56 in there working appropriately previously.
First question is what all will I need at minimum to switch this to an automatic? Obviously I'd need the transmission, but I'm more concerned about other items that might be missing. Like the computer, will the stock LT1 computer handle an automatic transmission or will I need an 84 computer to handle the transmission?
Second question is with this being an LT1, would a 700r4 from a late model third gen work on this engine? Or will I need an automatic from a 93 to 97 trans am / camaro? I don't even know what automatic transmissions were used in that year range.
Any other suggestions / comments you think are warranted please let me know. As I said I'm just theorizing atm because the car has been sitting in my backyard for a couple months now with no real interest in buying it so I figure I may as well do something with it. Just depends on how much of a pain it would be to do. And I don't want to invest the money in a replacement T56 for it, I can get an automatic much cheaper (I know where I can get a 700r4 out of a 91 camaro, freshly rebuilt for only a couple hundred which is why I asked specifically about that one).
