TCC lockup kit...or solenoid??

I need to get a lockup kit for my trans, but i am a bit confused. There are the kits that go for 80 to 200 dollars. But I am finding TCC lockup solenoids for around 30. Does anyone know anything about these solenoids, and will they do the trick, or should I just get the whole kit?

Re: TCC lockup kit...or solenoid??

So, what are you doing? Is this a swap and you dont have any parts, or a stock set up you wanna remove the ecm from the picture?

If its from scratch, the whole kit would work. If your just removing the ecm from the picture. Get the switch for the valve body gm p/n 8627332.
With that switch the trans will lock up in fourth. Thats all I ever ran in them, some people add that vacuum switch too.........

While your in there, might as well add a shift kit and what not. That art carr .500 valve is a nice addition too.

Edit, just remembered:
Darrel Young racing has a .521 valve, that was the last one we were running.. Also Toy Shop Transmissions was nice place.... both places good for info/stuff.

Re: TCC lockup kit...or solenoid??

stock set up and I am trying to run it without the ecm, got this car from a PO and trying to get it to where i can run it with no problems. So this solenoid i saw, and this switch you recommend, are they one in the same, or similar? from looking at the pictures of them they do to me. so if i get this switch, do i have to run a toggle to it, or just install it and done?

The solenoid should already be in the transmission, this part:

Replacement 2-wire TCC Solenoid for 2004R/700R4

The TCI lock up kit will work:

Lockup Kit for 200/700R4 Transmissions

It only locks in 4th, but this is better then nothing. Your trans _may_ already have the proper 4th gear pressure switch. If so then don't even need to drop the pan. If not, then will need to change it out.

Soleniod just sends oil to the converter, that ones just aftermarket. No toggle switch needed, will just work on its own. Would need to move some wires around on the valvle body.

Thats for sure too. There should be the 4th gear switch in there to signal the ecm. Connect that wire to the ecm tcc wire and done. < take both those wire loose from the ecm and connect together.

Depends what year you have. You can just as likely make it lock always in 2nd and 3rd but not 4th if you have the wrong switch.

ok, so the general line of thinking here is i should just pay the money for the kit to lock this thing up. man, these transmissions with this electrical crap were really a crappy idea, and an even crappier idea is to butcher these cars with no reason but to get a little more horsepower, at least do it right! I really am starting to not like POs' cause' i have to fix all of their mistakes.

Check the 4th gear switch with a meter, make sure it grounds in 4th.

If its not locking up at all now.. it might be something else.

No agreement on your first statement, but totally agree with the second. I refer to it as POS: Previous Owner Syndrome.

One reason that lockup kit is OK is that it has the vacuum switch. This will unlock the TCC when you put your foot into it. There is a thread here that covers what GM did on the f-body's that didn't have an ECM. Canadian cars mostly. Some Chevy Vans also had GM lockup kits on them.

The only piece that is missing is a thermal switch. So that the TCC doesn't lockup until there is some heat in the drivetrain.

Re: TCC lockup kit...or solenoid??

okay guys, really dumb question, but i am new to these cars so please put up with me. There is a vacuum line going to my trans, i assume it's for the overdrive cause i unhooked it just to see what it did, and it didn't shift into overdrive until around 60. so, after doing some reading in the forums, i am even more confused about the trans i have, and if i'll even need one of these tcc kits at all? and thank you guys, i am learning from you guys.

Could it already have a vacuum lock up kit installed? The TCI one is vacuum operated for example.
