Automatic Plastic Shifter Rod

Hi everyone, loooong time reader first time poster. I'm hoping someone can help me out since I have searched everywhere and not been able to find the answer to this. I picked up my 2nd third gen a couple weeks ago (1986 Berlinetta project) and had to replace the shift cable, well long story short I broke the shift cable bracket and the plastic selector rod in the automatic shift assembly. I ordered a shift assembly off of ebay and of course had to learn the hard way that stuff doesn't always fit (all the junkyards around me crushed all their third gens) so I'm going to make my old one work. I'm going to machine a metal rod to replace the plastic one but right now I can't seem to get the plastic rod out? I know their is supposed to be a retaining clip somewhere but for life of me can't seem to find it. If anyone could help I would sincerely appreciate it.

Re: Automatic Plastic Shifter Rod

well, it looks as if it was glued on and heated up so it isn't removable but I could be wrong... anyone have any clue how to get it off? Still can't find any kind of retaining clip.

Re: Automatic Plastic Shifter Rod

can anyone please help me with this?? I hate to take it in the shop for something this simple but at this point I really will have no choice. I've had people tell me that you can't take it out but that just can't be right, otherwise why would they sell replacement detent rods...

It should just pull out. Once you see the top nothing should be holding it in place.

Ive tried pulling it out by hand, viced it down and used pliers, hell I stood on and pulled it and it won't budge... nothing is working on it. I really hope it isn't glued on

Re: Automatic Plastic Shifter Rod

Does it push down OK? I can't remember if it can drop out the bottom if you fully dismantle the shifter. But it shouldn't be connected to anything. It should just sit in there.

Re: Automatic Plastic Shifter Rod

I think you have to take the shifter completely apart.

I've got one on the bench and just checked. It falls right out when turned upside down. Don't know what you've got going on.
