IIRC, there are two two-part cables, an early one which went to the transducer, then the speedo, and one probably like your 87, which is simply two parts (Why? Who knows). Finally, there's a one-piece, which seems like the best choice. Sorry, no part numbers.

Re: speedo cable P/N

When I looked up PN for a few different GM vehicles years ago, I found the two-piece non-transducer application cables tended to be installed on cars with higher (3.73, 3.42) gear ratios. But the lower geared models (2.14, 2.29, 2.41, 2.56, 2.73) tended to be listed as using the single-piece cables.

I've also had poor results from swapping a new GM one-piece cable into a car that originally had a two-piece cable and 3.73 gears. I pulled that later and installed a used two-piece cable with over 150k miles with better speedometer stability.

Sometimes it's easier for drivelines to be done as 2-piece from a manufacturer perspective and that may apply to speedometer cables as well.

In an indirect manner, I found Napa's cable listed for your car is indicated to be two-piece. Hope it works out for you.

Re: speedo cable P/N

If a cable goes into a transducer (located on the driver's side more or less under the wiper fluid tank) and another exits, I'd be surprised as, IIRC, that configuration ended early on--my 85, at least, isn't so equipped.

Re: speedo cable P/N

Looks like an OEM 2-piece cable to me.
Try Napa.
