Trans help..
Hello everyone, I have an 85 Camaro that someone swapped a 350 from a truck with a thm350 trans into. I got the car for 900.00 and when my g/f started driving it home(i had to drive my old truck, she cant drive a manual) it started slipping and she didnt know what to do. Apparently it was out of trans fluid when we got it. I have drivin the car on 200 mile round trips and less with minor slipping and have calmed down some of the slip because i found a hole in the vacuum line to the modulator. The car does great when the fluid is cold but when it gets hot it slips some. the hotter the worse it slips. Well here is the fun stuff... The car was originally a 5 spd. It still has the clutch pedal, master cylinder, and correct console plate for a manual. part of the slave cylinder is there still too but yeah, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what manual transmissions will fit the 350 easily in the 85 camaro. i know the stock t5 has an offset for clearance, so dident know if older 4 speed manuals would work or not. I would be willing to try to fix the THM350 if it was cheaper and dident require a rebuild as i figure it would. I know nothing about GM auto trannys. the only automatic trans i have taken apart was an old ford fmx. I would like to get a manual trans for the car just not sure what to use or what will fit the car/engine combo
Thanks for any help,
Zach

Re: Trans help..
As you stated the original is a T5 that was tilted about 18 degrees with the hydraulic clutch linkage. We all know that the T5 isn't very strong but should hold up if not doing any spirited driving. With the 350 you have it would be rated for less than the motor is . Some hold up for ages and some let go quickly. There are two types a non world class and a world class T5.
In 82 and 83? they put a Borg Warner 4 speed T10 in some cars. It had the old style mechanical linkage which can be hard. Some people on here have tried converting to hydraulic linkage with these transmissions. The trans is stronger but has no overdrive. It is similar to the muncie 4 sp which could be swapped in for it.
Many people on here, myself included, are opting for the 4th gen LT1 T56 6 sp trans. It is a straight forward swap and much stronger than a T5 but will require a aftermarket crossmember and a little bit bigger hole made in the transmission tunnel floor. It will also neeed a different driveshaft from the TH350 I believe. One fron a 700R4 will work. Will also need to check the torque arm. At least will need a torque arm bracket. One big drawback is the cost to make it compatible with your cable driven speedo. You may also need a special flywheel for the 2pc rear main seal crank if that is what you currently have. Do a search for T56 swaps and read the sticky at the top.
Other trans can be put in but are not as common and likely not found used.
