B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

So my friend and I are having some problems adjusting his new megashifter after we just installed it. As per instructions we manually set the gear switch lever on the tranny and the cable to 1st gear and adjusted them to match.

Then we set each of them to park to check if they would still lign up. They didn't. The cable was about an eight of an inch too short.

Now, we think the error lies in the fact that the lip on the tranny pan is 13mm thick. The bracket that holds the cable is bolted to this edge, and on an OEM pan this edge would require us to use the supplied spacers. As it is now, the bracket mounting point is about 5 mm further from the transmission housing than it would be.

Could it be that this extra height would result in too little travel distance for the cable? If so, how can it be fixed? Would we have to grind down the lip on the pan? Or would this weaken it too much?

I'll post a couple more pics below

Here is the lip on the tranny oil pan.

Here you see how much the bracket should be raised with an original oil pan using the spacer that came with the kit.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Oh, by the way, it's a B&M Console Megashifter, part # 80692.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

i see your issue. i usually set the cable length with the gear select lever in the neutral posistion. see if that helps. if you need to add a few washers to the spacers on the pan rail,...it shouldnt be an issue. try setting it up again in the neutral posistion.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

Tried to set the cable in neutral and it helped a little, but unfortunately not enough.
I would think adding washers would make it worse, wouldn't it? The problem is that the lip on the transmission oil pan is too thick, compared to how thick it should be with a normal lip using spacers. Imagine a right triangle, where the lip forms the longest cathetus, and the smallest angle is at the point of the lever.

As it is now, the added elevation caused by the thickness of the lip (the shortest cathetus) creates a longer hypotenuse in this triangle. Basically, what I'm asking is, do I have to grind down the lip, making it thinner? Or is there another way?

Again, thank you for your responses.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

how about subtracting the difference from the supplied spacers? either stack some washers or grind down the supplied spacers to fit the proper fulcrum.
i would go by the supplied parts and grind on the pan rail if it was mine. just where needed.
cant be that complicated. take your time. enjoy a frosty beverage and youll figure it out. lol.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

I kinda figured I would have to grind down the lip, my only concern is how much it would weaken it if I do, as I will have to grind down to about half its thickness, and it is only aluminum. Do you guys think it will hold?

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

Did you bolt the bracket to the pan using the correct holes?

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

Yes. As per instructions I used the two middle bolts, and if I bolt it further back- or forwards there isn't enough threads on the cable sleeve to adjust it that far.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

in the pic it looks like you can bend the cable bracket upwards while it is a bolted to the pan. if that doesn't work then you'd have to get a stamped steel pan that the b&m shifter is designed for. don't grind the pan down because it might crack and would be worthless. you can resell it on ebay or something and get some money out of it.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

Random suggestion, but the previous owner of my car had a similar problem. Turned out that he installed the cable wrong on the shifter and fought with the adjustment on the trans for years.

The cable's attachment flange was on the inside of the mount instead of the outside.

This is the correct way:

This and the shorter cable from B&M fixed all my problems with the Megashifter.

Re: B&M Megashifter adjustment issues

That seems to have done the trick The cable flange was on the inside as you said it would be. Moving it to the outside fixed the problem Thank you guys so much for your help.
