Need Help Finding Parts...

I would like High Quality Aftermarket Parts.

What are your thoughts on Aluminum Yoke's?

1. U-Joints
2. Pinion Yoke
3. Transmission Yoke

I have a Borg Warner 9 Bolt

Re: My Drivetrain...

Good purchase. Better than the late 4th gen cardboard damped ones.
The only part of it that's aluminum is the shaft and it's yokes; the rest of the parts are steel.
1. A solid cross with pressed on inner bearing races but steel caps wouldn't save enough weight to be worth it IMO. I'll stick to basic Spicer stuff.
2. Wouldn't be worth it in weight savings.
3. The aluminum throwout bearing retainer sleeve on some T5's is a common failure point. Similarly, a slip yoke would be a poor choice of application of aluminum.

Coincidentally, I found a certain structural panel for a (non-third gen) car in aluminum on the web today. It's something I wanted to fabricate about 6 years ago. Now, I don't know if I care other than to get my buddy one for his b-day.

Hey Man, Thanks for the reply...

But I couldn't quite understand what you were trying to tell me.

I need to rebuild my Drive shaft and wanted help picking out some quality parts.

Here is a list of some Components offered by Moser Engineering.

Re: My Drivetrain...

Here is a shot of My T/A Performance Rear End Girdle. Enjoy...

The ironic part is that I had originally purchased a Perfect Launch Differential Cover in a 10 Bolt Pattern. Only to realize that it didn't fit...
Turns out I have a 9 Bolt Rear End.

Replacement Spicer u-joints will be fine. In theory, ones without zerks are stronger, since their cross is solid, instead of drilled through. If you're just running hard on the freeway and putting miles on the car, ones with zerks are fine.
A friend used to run 10s with a 4 speed, using a third gen 1LE shaft.
If it was me, I'd make sure the u-joint in it fit the pinion yoke, then drop it off at a local well-respected driveline shop for the new u-joints. Done.

Re: My Drivetrain...

Thanks JMD,

Is Spicer a Brand or Type?
What does it mean by 1350 Series?
Should I replace the Transmission Yoke?

Re: My Drivetrain...

Brand.

Each u-joint type is a specification of the cup and cross dimensions.
3R is used on a lot of GM passenger car stuff. A 1310 is similar but not the same. A 1330 has larger dimension(s) and a 1350, bigger yet.
A conversion joint matches a 3R pinion yoke to a 1330 driveshaft yoke (for example.)

I can't tell from that picture if that groove is a problem.

You could polish it, use the driveshaft and see if it leaks, then replace the u-joints, replacing the yoke accordingly. Or if you want to service the driveline once and get use out of it and that groove is very noticeable by thumbnail drag, just replace it.

There are some cheap cast yokes out there. (think < $50 from Speedway) But there are plenty of good ones that won't be cheap but will be good for a long time.

When I was in NM, I had a great driveline shoppe where I could buy Borg Warner and Spicer parts. Hopefully you can find one near you.

Re: My Drivetrain...

Hey Man. Thanks a lot. Very Helpful...

You think you can help me with find a Good Transmission Yoke?

I'm going to Fully Service the Drive Shaft before I put it in.

Thanks Again...

Re: My Drivetrain...

Well, I was able to prevail in my search for my Drivehsaft Componets, I'm going with TCI parts...

Word to the Wise

It is Cheaper to Purchase a NEW ALUMINUM DRIVESHAFT, then it is to buy a used one and have to rebuild/service it!
