TV / Detent Cable Frustration

So it seems NONE of the major parts stores carry the correct TV / Detent cable for any of the TPI engines. I have tried looking up for every year available from 1985 - 1992, F-Body and Corvette, and every cable I've tried has been utterly wrong. Autozone and Pep Boys don't carry them at all, Rock Auto and Advance Auto Parts both carry the ATP Y-363, which is the carbureted version, and O'Reilly Auto Parts has several from Pioneer, none of which actually properly fit or allow adjustment on a TPI engine. I have compared each to the stock cable on my '88 LB9 IROC-Z, and none were close. Either the catalog listings for the cables are utterly hosed, or I'm missing something. The dealerships stopped carrying TPI parts ages ago. Anyone know where to reliably find the correct cable?

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

Did you run into the same issue I am? I tried 4 different cables from O'Reilly, each tiem waiting for it to be special ordered in, none ultimately worked. And yet their system has them all as for various year TPI engines. The ATP one that showed up in my Rock Auto order today is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long to fit my TPI, and has a connector on the end for a carbureted hookup...and yet again, shows as being the correct part for all the TPI engined cars. WTF???

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

Oh I know, the last thing I need is a burned up 700R4 because of a misadjusted TV cable. The first one I got from O'Reilly, the one they list for a 1988 5.0L FI Camaro, was almost the right length, but when I went to do the adjustment, the throttle went to WOT but the cable was still too slack to ratchet the adjuster. It was REAL close to the right size, but just a hair too long. Took me forever and a lot of banging my head on the counter to get that point across to the guys at O'Reillys.

If you really can't find anything else you can use a universal adjustable cable.

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

Well, my last resort was a local junkyard here HAD an '88 medium orange IROC-Z with the TPI, and when I was there Monday it still had the correct TV cable on it. As I was expecting my Rock Auto order Tuesday, I didn't pull it. I went back today to pull it since the Rock Auto one turned out to be incorrect, only to find out THEY HAD CRUSHED THE #$%&^*ing CAR!! Sooooo, back to square one.

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

I know this post is a little old, but im running into the same problem. I actually work at advance auto parts and just installed the one we list for it. Mine is an 86 TPI 305, the cable i just put has the same length housing but the inside cable is waaaaaaaaay longer and has a second adjustment screw on the end that hooks to the throttle. With it adjusted to take up as much slack as i could get it without actuating the TV in the tranny its got a good 6-8 inches left over sticking out the front and its not ratcheting the regular adjuster very far at all. I just put this tranny in and i think it still needs some adjusting but with it being so much longer and having that second adjuster on it im not sure if i can get it right, might try napa tomorrow if i cant get it right. Anyways i dont recommend the Advance auto parts one, and i work there.

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

I found that RockAuto.com DOES in fact carry the correct AC Delco OEM cable. It just takes a bit of searching to find it, as it doesn't come up in the vehicle search. You have to do a part number search for the OEM part number 25521263 to find it, but it is available, and only $16.42.

And that number is good for the tuned port? If so that's awesome and thanks for the info!

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration

Thanks red rock, but I think I'll be going with the brand new vs the 20+ year old one for only $4 more.

Re: TV / Detent Cable Frustration
