1984 z28 Problems
Hi everybody.
I just recently bought a 1984 Z28 Camaro
I only drove it for a while but I always have trouble shifting into second. And if by any chance I power shift and it DOES go in it grinds really bad.
Right now, I am in the middle of swapping the engine so I figured I might as well fix that problem while its all out. The only problem is I can only find minimal information on what transmission is my in my car. Either they are rare, or I'm just not looking in the right places. So basically my question is, what are my options?
Where can I find another Transmission? Or Is it an easy fix? Maybe its a good time for a transmission swap?
I have tried searching but could really use a hand.

Re: 1984 z28 Problems
That problem isn't the transmission; it's the clutch.
Put a new one in it while it's apart. Don't forget to install a pilot bearing in your new crank. Be sure to put the throwout bearing on the fork the right way, per the pics I've posted on here about a million times.
Your transmission is a T-5. Quite common, although it's slightly different in every chassis that it was used in, and ones from other cars - Mustangs, S trucks, and whatever all else - won't fit. Even ones from 6-cyl Camaro and Firebird won't fit a V8. But your problem isn't one that requires another transmission so don't worry about it, a well-done clutch job will make it like new again. (at least as far as crashing the gears is concerned...)

Re: 1984 z28 Problems
Not really... every NEW clutch I've ever had from a name-brand mfr (CF, Hays, Ram, B-W, McLeod, maybe a few others I can't recall right now), in about a dozen stick-shift cars I've had over the years, has worked FLAWLESSLY when installed properly.
Installation is the key. Do it right, you'll have no trouble with any of em.
