I need help my shifter broken today as i was driving home the select button spring broke so the button on the shift **** is in the down position so that it will not lock in to postion. I have the orignal service manual but the picture does not show how the spring is position. two question does any have a detail picture of the shifter and may be a parts break down and also any suggest were i might be able to find parts for the shifter other than the dealer i like to keep it original. if i cannot find the parts i will have to install a aftermarket shifter well i went my local chevy dealership parts dept which is open on saturday. was able to get a parts breaker down of the shifter.the spring that holds the j hook in place that is dpressedby the select button was broken of course that spring is no longer avalible thru gm. so i went to local hardware and bought a spring that would work. problem solved

 

You're not going to find what you need at any of the regular auto parts sources, you will need to call the restoration places, like Year One, Classic Industries, et cetera.

 

Probably not going to find a "new" "83 Z28 shifter button return spring"...

Probably going to have to do one of 3 things:

1. Find somebody that sodomized their car with an aftermarket one and still has the OE in working condition;
2. Find something at a hardware store that will work;
3. Find something in some other kind of car at the junkyard that will work.

Just can't imagine looking something up in a book, the "book" actually showing it, and it being available as a GM part #.
