Lots of sources for 3.73:1 gears, but like James, I'm curious about this "stripping" thing, please post a pic as soon as you pop the rear cover. Also, if the 3.08:1 gears aren't damaged, you might have a buyer if the price is right.

Re: axle gear problem
i dont know the axle winds up it has this whining noise when you drive it and since this is my first car i dont really know whats going on. i know it has posi and it has a 3.08 gear in it and its a tractor when you drive it and i wanted a shorter gear but not in the 4.00's. am i just better off to buy an axle or just get the gear?? i dont want to get my license and the next day that axle gives out haha

I bet the guys at the yard can yank it out of there faster than you can walk back out and grab your wallet you forgot and left in your car.

I can swap one, laying on the floor in my garage, in less than 2 hours, drive-in to drive-out. You're probably quicker than me, so it shouldn't take you even that short of a time.
As "major component" swaps go in these cars, that one is pretty much the easiest.

Re: axle gear problem
Check stick cars since they usually got a decent gear and 88-89 350 and 305 cars got 9 bolts which are better. The 305 stick tpi cars got a 345 gear and in 89 you got the 11.7 inch rear disc with pbr calipers which is the same rear brakes that the corvette got. You can get a 370 gear and 410 gear for the 9 bolt on www.9bolt.com an 370 gear from randys ring and pinion. 10 bolts are 7.5 ring gear and 9 bolts are 7 3/4. It's pitiful that from 89-92 the rear disc brakes were 11.7 and the front was 10.5. Somebody goofed.

Re: axle gear problem
No, avoid stick cars. The abuse of clutch-dump launches at 5000 RPM does kill the crush-sleeve, which hurts the ring & pinion. Plus the shock loading stresses, fatigues and weakens the gears and everything else. If you're going with used gears, only use gears that have always lived behind an automatic. L69 cars could have 3.73:1 with the auto, but those were only 7.5" 26-spline. The '90-'92 V6 / auto cars had 28-spline, and were 7.625" 3.42:1 Besides 85% of all third-gens were automatic to start with. Best to get the right axle, then worry about swapping brakes. Far cheaper and easier than messing with gears, far easier than torquing a new crush-sleeve correctly.
