Torque converter locking and unlocking.
Hey guys, I've got an issue with my torque converter. It intermittently locks up then unlocks when I am driving steady. I'm not hitting the brakes, down shifting, or taking my food all the way off the gas. I am guessing it may be a wiring issue. Does anybody have an idea about what this issue is?

Hi.
I guess you have a L98 engine in your car with a ECM controlled converter lock up??
If so they are computer controlled to lock up at an exact speed in MPH.
That means if you are cruising slowly in 20mph or whatever the computer is commanded to, and holding it steady the computer (ECM) will engage and disengage the clutch with only small seconds between. I guess this could be frustrating some times. I know that making a new EPROM wth new data for the lock-up is a way to fix this.

Re: Torque converter locking and unlocking.
The ECM has to see the ECM temp sender showing within a certain range to indicate the car is warmed up. It also needs a steady signal from the TPS. Hook a scanner on it and watch those values.

Re: Torque converter locking and unlocking.
I got the problem solved. I ordered a 700r4 trans and converter from Hughes Performance. They sent me a trans that had a wiring harness that was not compatible with the computer. The computer was not in control of locking the converter. They had a wired for a car that didn't have a computer controlling the converter lock up. I had to go through a lot of crap with them to figure that out.
I will never purchase anything from Hughes Performance again. I specifically filled out there order sheet and told them the specs for my car. I also told them that I am using the stock computer for my car so, it would control the lockup function.
I had to deal with Hughes Performance for a month trying to resolve this issue. They allowed me to send the trans and converter back and get a full rerund. I shouldn't have to pay for their issues with not following directions.
I eventually purchased another transmission from Bowtie Overdrives and that solved the issue. The lockup functions just like it is supposed to. Also this transmission shifts better.
The Hughes Performance trans would bang in to everygear even an light throttle.
