5 speed swap

im thinkin of doing a 5 speed swap to my 91 camaro350.. its kinda hard to find a 3rd 5 speed out of a v8 car. I was seeing if anyone knew if a 5 speed out of a 3.4 or 3.8 work work if I got a different bellhousing

Re: 5 speed swap

Bad idea.

Deliberately putting in a T-5 behind a 350 is risky enough; using a 6-cyl one is just plain .... asking for trouble.

Either find the right thing - which you'll probably still tear up amazingly fast anyway - or get a LT1 T-56 instead.

Re: 5 speed swap

as Sofakingdom said it is not a good idea. The input shaft is the wrong length, special clutch disc for van?, bad internal gearing, and still a weak transmission. Can a 3.4 be used, yes but not reccomended. I found a V8 T5 near me but passed in favor of a T56 because I knew nothing about the transmission except it came from a salvage yard many years ago with condition unknown. I found it at a transmission repair shop that I know keeps some transmissions on hand. At 375 for an unknown trans and bellhousing I felt better getting a T56 2.5 hrs away from me for 850 with a good flywheel and nearly new clutch as well as bellhousing and shifter and bolts.

That said I still feel that for me with average everyday driving the T5 would have held up decause I don't dump the clutch or race etc. I can say that with certainty because I am not college age anymore and just want a fun car to drive. I last did any racing about 15 or more yrs ago. However I prefer the dependability and idea of the 6 speed tranny.
