Best Manual Tranny to Swap

What is the easiest manual transmission to swap into my 92 350? I currently have a rebuilt 700R4 with a shift kit, which has been awesome, but I find myself wishing I could down shift everyday. Not to mention 4th gear isn't worth jack. So what would be the easiest manual transmission that isn't a piece of crap I can swap into my car? I know work WILL be involved, just want to know the easiest one, requiring minimal body modification. Thanks.

Re: Best Manual Tranny to Swap

A LT1 T56 is the only one to do as its not worth doin a T5 unless you plan not too beat on it all the time.

There are some bolt in TKO kits, but easiest would be t5 or T56. Whats your budget?

For the tranny itself i'm willing to go about $800. I would love to find a used one thats not beat to hell. I'd say whole project my budget is about $2000 at the moment. I can always put it on hold if I need more money. Whats a TKO bolt in?

You might the able to get away with a t56 swap for 2k the but I would expect more along the line of 2500.

I am thinking a tko swap would be about 3200 with a new tko trans.

what he said.

lt1 transmissions are in high demand, they usually go for 8-1200 bux for a good one. you can do better, but its hard. thast just for the trans, none of the conversion parts.

the tko is a different trans, heavy duty 5 speed. its sorta based of a ford t3550 trans. They do not come up used very often, so you will be paying for anew trans. Its a very stout piece, stronger than a stock t56 for that matter. My biggest gripe with it is that its a very tall trans sincei have multiple shjifter locations on top, and it does not fit the trans tunnel very well, so it sits on a decent angle down in the back. Other than that, the proper ones for the 3rd gen bolt right in place of a t5 using the same size flywheel and clutch, same bellhousing ect, with an adapter plate. Needs a aftermarket trans crossmember, or modification to the stock one. They make a tko 500, 600 and there are kits to make a 900. the number is the torque rating. I have a tko600 in my 86

Re: Best Manual Tranny to Swap

If your plans for the engine are not to nuts and you don't plan on a lot of track time you can get a WC T5 rebuilt fairly cheap and then just add a cluster support plate and enjoy that. I have seen entire swap kits for 550

Re: Best Manual Tranny to Swap

I plan on getting her to 350 RWHP and then just making it an awesome handling car. Everything suspension related is being upgraded to the most expensive/best stuff I can manage. I just want her to be able to stand a chance when the GT in the next lane tries to play. Besides that, I want a car thats fun as hell to drive, thus the suspension redoing. So can a T5 handle that? As far as the mods I plan to achieve this with:full exhaust (possibly a nice true dual job), intake (larger runners and fully porting lower intake), maybe that little ram air kit on Hawk's, and new heads just for kicks. I think that will do it. With all that and the suspension I'm thinking some where in the twelves will be easily attainable. So again, can a T5 handle that?

No, a T5 will probably not live if you like to have fun. Honestly, I can't think of a reason to swap from an auto to T5 unless funds are very tight. If you are going through the pain of the swap, might as well do it right.

Re: Best Manual Tranny to Swap

If you want to have fun, I would save up for a Tremec T56 Magnum, remember do it right once rather than many times wrong, it pays off. I have been learning that my whole life. Watching many other people try to go the cheap way and end up kicking themselves for doing so.

Re: Best Manual Tranny to Swap

That may not be the easiest but is nearly as easy as the T5. I was looking for either tranny and found a T56 2-3 hrs away for 850 w/ alot of the other parts needed for the swap. I found it on Craigs List from another 3rd gen enthusiast who was originally planning on putting it into one of his 7 or 8 Camaro's and changed his mind. At the same time I found another 6 - 7 hrs away w/ a nearly new clutch for 650. Though I did not know it at the time mine had a nearly new clutch also.
For another 50 I have everything but a starter and hydraulics and the Speedo adapter. I am planning on making my own crossmember based on others on here and already have most of the material I would need.
Time and lots of searching can keep the costs of a swap cheaper.

They are out there.

Are you talking about Hawks thirdgen parts.com? All I've seen on there is a $2200 kit.
