700r4 rebuild

Hey guys, It's time for a rebuild on my 700r4. I was out cruising tonight, and I noticed during heavy throttle, the trans will slip when shifting into 2nd (revs up during shift, and soft shift).

Since I will have the trans apart, this is the time to do a shift kit and torque converter. What brand of shift kit have people had the best luck with? I have heard that B&M is not good, and that Transgo is the best. Any suggestions?

Also anyone had any luck with the summit racing brand torque converters? I'm looking for something in the 2800-3000rpm stall.

Any insight/suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Re: 700r4 rebuild

TransGo is over-priced and fails to raise the line pressure. Thus no increase in torque capacity. I've used TCI and B&M, the B&M is better. Slipping 1-2 upshift is the expected 1-2 accumulator spring breakage. While you're at it, get a Corvette servo. Skip the billet servos.

Re: 700r4 rebuild

Thanks for the reply, i havn't read much on the TCI kits, I'll have to do some research. I plan on getting the corvette servo. Anyone know where I can find a manual with all the specs and procedures for the 700r4?

Re: 700r4 rebuild

TransGo addresses & solves the 700R4 problems. Add the right size main boost valve (.471" or .500") for the application will increase the torque capacity. If you are going to manual shift the transmission at all, then you will need the .296" intermediate/reverse boost valve for a good 1-2 WOT shift. The Corvette servo will work in almost all applications, it is the accumulator for 3rd gear and was designed to improve the 2-3 shift at all throttle openings. When working with the accumulation you will be able to keep the 1-2 part throttle shift smooth and have the shift getting quicker with more throttle. This will improve the durability of the transmission. A firm or hard part throttle 1-2 shift will eventually ruin the geartrain, is annoying, attracts cops, dangerous in the rain and biggest reason, women hate it. When setup correctly, the 1-2 shift with using the Corvette servo, should be smooth at part throttle. I modify the TransGo Shift kits to match the torque converter and stall, rear end gear ratio, what's been done to the motor, how you drive, etc. to obtain good quality shifts. I combine the TransGo Shift kit and the 700-2-3 Performance Shift kit to get the best of both worlds here. The B&M and TCI do not address the inherent problems with the 700R4 transmission, or do much of anything for the 2-3 WOT shift. I do not recommend them. When it comes to torque converters, do not use the 12" for anything over a 2,400 - 2,500rpm stall. The 9.5" torque converter from Edge, Vigilante, Circle D, Pro Torque, Yank and some others are the ones to use here. The TCI & B&M are the ones to stay away from. There failure rate is very high when used with the 700R4 transmissions. As for the internal parts, the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 2-4 band and the Borg Warner Hi-Energy 3-4 clutches are the best to use here in terms of durability and will hold high horsepower when "matched" to your application. Adding the Turbulator steel clutches (they offer less parasitic drag) to the low/reverse and the reverse input will free up a little horsepower and give you a slight increase in gas mileage. Use the stock Borg Warner clutches everywhere else. There is much more, but this will give you a good start. By the way, make sure you keep your bearings and inspect them for wear, if they pass inspection reuse them. The reason I state this is Torrington (as of right now) is not making any bearing kits for the 700R4/4L60E transmissions, and haven't for awhile now. I have been looking all over the country for them, as everybody building these units needs them for their transmissions and they are not available. If anybody knows where or has any bearing kits or partial bearing kits, let me know as I need them for the rebuild kits that I offer. If you have any questions on anything here, let me know? Dana

HOLY!! haha, I'm going to have to read that a few times to soak in all that info!! Thank you very much, And thanks for the tips on the torque converters, That is one area I don't have much experience in. I have rebuilt 1 auto trans and a couple manuals to factory specs in the past, but this will be my first high performance build, and all the help and tips I can get is great!

And your right about the "women hate it", when I had my TV cable missadjusted, my wife complained EVERY TIME!! lol

Re: 700r4 rebuild

I would have you rebuild my trans, as it sounds like you would get the setup dead on, however california is a wee bit too far from Ontario Canada for my budget. lol
