Hi im looking for a harder launch and take off out of my 84 camaro with its L69 5L it has a new cam with .468 lift and i was wondering if a new stall would be a good upgrade?,

 

Converter stall should always match the camshaft. For street/strip, you want a converter that stalls about 500 rpm into the powerband. If the cam card say the operating range is 1800-6000 then you want a converter with around 2300 stall.

A stall speed that is too high is just as bad as having one that's too low.

 

Now what would the stock speed of my converter be?, its a 700r4 out of an 84 z28

 

Stock stall speeds are around 1600-1800 at the most since stock cams are all designed for idle speed and up.

 

I have a lunati 60101 its operating range is 1000rpms to 5500 rpms, so is the stock converter good enough?,

What does that REALLY mean? What size engine does that apply to? With what other supporting mods? Does it mean that torque is constant between those RPMs? Torque is within 10% in that range? Within 50%? Does it merely mean that ANY engine at all, no matter what, "will run" between those RPMs in spite of that cam being in it? Well???

Right: I don't know either. Nobody does, because it's not any kind of objective measureable statement of fact. It's just AD COPY. NOTHING says ANYWHERE what that REALLY means. Not even in the fine print "side effects disclosure" statement that's 3 times as long as the "lifestyle drug" ad.

I'm guessing you're asking this because like everybody else that has ever slid an aftermarket cam off into a stock motor, you now can't spin the tires any more, even though you used to be able to do so at will. In fact, since your motor is a 305, I'm betting your "leave" is so soggy, you get punted out of traffic by minivans; and that's why you're asking this question in the first place.

With that cam, a stall speed somewhere in the 2400 RPM kind of neighborhood will restore your old launch, and even a little bit more than that.

 

I was just wondering if a new stall would be a good idea, i seen that the 84 l69 was tested in 84 and did 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, thanks for the post i'll take a look around im having trouble keeping it running with this new cam, i have alot of work to do!

 

Yes the L69 was BY FAR the fastest motor of its day, though that day didn't last very long... but nowadays, it's kinda pitiful, even if in flawlessly showroom-new perfect condition. Although, you most likely have the watered-down version; the good ones (all 83s, 84 5-speeds, and 85 & 86) came with 3.73 gears, but the majority of the 84 auto ones only got 3.42s. Still, should be a fairly peppy ride, even if not a "winner" any more.

Yes a higher-stall converter will DEFINITELY help it out.
