small leak help!

So i went underneath my 1984 to do a routine check up on it so while under there i noticed a very light drip, and it was dripping from the transmission on the shifter assembly on the transmission, now what i want to know is if its the gasket or something worse

also while im here i might as well get something off my mind, ever since i got my 1984 trans am, no matter what gear i shift to (reverse or drive) the car would lunge in that direction no matter how low i set the idle. also when shifting out of first to second the car bangs (you can feel it when the car shifts too), and from what i feel, it feels like its the rear passenger wheel but cant say for sure. when it shifts to any other gear but first to second, it shifts perfectly, and down shifts good this has got me scratching my head

any ideas?

thanks again!

Depends on how "bad" you consider a gasket....

It's probably the seal on the shift lever shaft.

On the banging,My 85 was slamming into drive and reverse pretty hard with a vicous upshift/downshift.

Replaced the tv cable, drives nice and smooth now

Re: small leak help!

Looks to me like it needs to go to the quarter car wash and get cleaned off so you can see where it's coming from. Not to mention, so you can work on it without having to wallow in .... that ..... filth.

Got a quarter car wash nearby?

Got a pair of ramps, or a jack and pair of stands, etc.?

Got somewhere you can buy engine degreaser? (AZ, WalMart, parts stores, etc.)

Got some quarters?

What are you still "looking for"?
