firm engagement in od or d, seems like 1st to 3rd shift

If i shift into od or d it shifts into gear firm. If i drive normally or at wot it seems to shift from 1st to 3rd and fall flat on its face...any ideas? Just put trans in yesterday. Went from no 2-3 shift to this...help is greatly appreciated.

Re: firm engagement in od or d, seems like 1st to 3rd shift

After searching the boards last night and today, I'm going to see if it might have a manual valve body in it. When I get home I'm going to try and manually shift from 1st to see if it might be the issue...

I think that it's still weird that it's acting like this. It will take 1st up to about 4k and then drop down to about 1200 rpm like it went right into 3rd...it doesn't slip or anything...just like it was regularly shifting but skips right over 2nd.

Checked TV cable and it seems to be positioned correctly...push towards firewall, open TB to WOT, push the button and let it adjust back to correct setting.

My last trans had a really firm 1-2 and then skyrocket slip in third...just kinda irritating...3rd trans in a car with 24k on the clock...

Thanks for any input.

Josh

you may have a problem with your torque converter, also check your trans fluid level. low fluid could cause misshifts

I will check the fluid level again when I get home...pretty sure it's at the full line...didn't want to drive it unless it was there. You're right, it could also be the converter...made sure it was seated before putting the trans in and also made sure that it was seated before tightening everything up...frustrating...

Thanks,
Josh

Still haven't been able to get it out and manually shift it through the gears to see if that will work. Checked fluid level, it's in the hash marks on the stick. Checked TV cable adjustment, it was only a click or 2 off [marked where it was with a sharpie]. Hopefully I'll get it out today as it's not raining anymore...noticed a dent in the pan on the passenger side approx same location as the tv, but not deep. It's right on the corner...planning on dropping the pan tonight and changing it with the pan from the old trans...I can take a look at the valve body at the same time. Called the guy I got it from and he was pretty clear that it was rebuilt approx a year ago [has paperwork].

Thanks for any input.

ok...pulled the pan and took a look. the trans in the car is from an 86 Iroc and the valve is TOTALLY different from the one that was in the car. There are 4 pressure switches in the one I have in the car now, but there was only 1 on the one I had in the car... 2 switches appear to be bad. I was able to reappropriate the 1 switch from the old trans...but I am wondering how they work together.

TIA,
Josh

Man oh man wish I could help you, I don't know maybe a good transmission manual or wounder down to a transmission shop in your area.
