Problems downshifting into 2nd gear

Hello everyone, as you can see from my profile, i have an 88 gta, i believe with the stock T5 transmittion. When i first got the car i would go from first to second gear, and second would about 60 percent of the time pop out, i brought it to my mechanic, and he did a shifter adjustment which entirely fixed that problem, now for whatever reason i have no problem going from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, but downshifting from any gear into 2nd, it physically will not allow me to do, i asked my mechanic about this he said because the T5 transmittion has really small gears close together making it impossible, and that i should look for the T56 transmittion for a swap, but i do not have that kind of money and would like a more simple solutiong, anyone know a way to fix this problem, or do i just have to live with it?

I would also like to add, that it would not downshift into second, before or after the shifter adjustment was made, i just included that in case anyone knows that the problem with second popping out has something to do with my current situation

Re: Problems downshifting into 2nd gear

I know its not the same trans but i have a TKO and downshifting to second requires a bit of finesse to make it go in smoothly. It will go in if i push it but i rev match and it slips in a bit smoother. Do you rev-match downshift or just put it in and then bring the rpms up after its in gear? Also what speed are you downshifting to 2nd at? I dont generally shift down to 2nd until im at around 25 or so.

Re: Problems downshifting into 2nd gear

The last T5 I had before the T56 swap would not downshift to 2nd or 1st. The only way to get it into 2nd at any speed was to try to go to 2nd then 1st and then it would go into 2nd. Otherwise it would not go into 2nd even if you rev matched. Getting it into first would sometime be a chore unless the car was moving slightly. Never did find out what was wrong with that trans. It is still on my garage floor.

Upshifting was always trouble free. And my current T56 is perfect in every way.

Re: Problems downshifting into 2nd gear

Sounds like either a synchro going bad or the shift rods aren't right. Never had a problem downshifting in my t-5s.
Do you know how to double clutch? It's rev matching in neutral before the shift into second. If that makes it better, prob indicates a synchro problem. If its still just as hard, prob shifter rod is bent or something.
