Looking to upgrade my 1983 NW T-5
I have an all stock setup that has the manual clutch with the z-bar mechanical linkage which works great. I would love to keep it that way but if I can't I will have to go to the hydraulic clutch I suppose.
What are the choices of transmissions that I have?
Don't want a used transmission in this car and plan on installing a 406 in the future.
It will have around 350 hp at the rear wheels.
Don't want to cut up the floor pans.
It still has all the stock suspension.
Still has the stock 83 console and shifter.
Mechanical speedometer.
Stock mechanical clutch bell housing.
What is the best option considering the 406 will probably have around 480 ft. lbs of torque at the engine.?

you can upgrade to a WC T5 and use the Z bar system and that can be a good thing as the hydro system that GM used later is non adj unlike the Z bar system. unfortunatly repacement parts for the Z system are VERY slim. you can build the WC T5 up for a price but that can get spendy.
another alt is the T-56 and for what one of those cost new you can buy all of the needed items to make a good used one work and can beat the mess out of it with no issues. the only cutting you would need to do is the 2 in at the shifter hole.

Re: Looking to upgrade my 1983 NW T-5
I was looking at the complete G-Force transmission as well. I wonder if that is a total bolt in with no modifications for my car?
With the T-56 will I be able to use the stock console with no mods or do I have to use a different shifter since you have to cut 2 inches of the floor pan?
Can I use the stock crossmember as well?
The track bar that I have on the trans that goes to the rearend is for the 83 only the way I have been told. I wonder if I have to change to the newer style as well?

Re: Looking to upgrade my 1983 NW T-5
I have a 1995 LT1 T56 converted to mechanical linkage.
It uses the same length driveline, the same clutch and flywheel and same mechanical linkage-to-fork location as a T5.
I wouldn't consider any "upgraded" T5 with a 406. I did put a hydr. clutch T56 behind a 408 not too long ago.
Other than the output shaft size, I've no reason to think a TKO is any better trans., than a T56.

Re: Looking to upgrade my 1983 NW T-5
jmd did you use an aftermarket bellhousing or the stock 1983 bellhousing?
Did the crossmember have to be changed or modified?
What did you do about the speedometer? Did it have a mechanical drive or was it electric?
Is the G-Force trans just a stock case with upgraded parts or is the whole trans new and built to hold a little more than the stock one?

95, cut.
Read the sticky
Haven't modded it yet. I had a tailhousing modified by alloy (member here) but it went on a customer's car.
G-force sells a lot of different stuff. Modded T5s and others.
