Please help!!! Rear End Question!!

My uncle is restoring a 68 Camaro. The diff. has a number: 22522676 and the axel has 6HS C0522 2. I believe someone told him this was an 86 rear end which is why I am here. What's size, gear ratio, and possibly year of these #'s??? Both wheels don't spin so I figured it is not a Posi rear end. Where did this rear end come from????

Re: Please help!!! Rear End Question!!

You should be able to get numbers off the gears themselves which will tell you the ratio.

Re: Please help!!! Rear End Question!!

If it's an 1986, it's more than likely a 10 bolt rear, as for the gear ratio, you are better off removing the rear cover and looking on the edge of the ring gear for the ratio stamped on it. Depends on whether it came out of an auto. or manual trans. car. Probably needs oil change and inspecting anyway. here's a link from the home page with some info. https://www.thirdgen.org/1986-chevy-camaro

Re: Please help!!! Rear End Question!!

Get the numbers off of the ring gear. This will tell the ratio and the date. If it's a 3rd gen rear end then it's going to be wider than the 1st gen rear end. It will also have metric studs for the wheels. The 3rd gen rear ends are quite a bit weaker than the 1st gen rear ends, so if it turns out to be a 3rd gen I recommend finding a 1st gen to replace it.

If the rear is a 10-bolt:

Re: Please help!!! Rear End Question!!

It's a 10-bolt, from one of these cars, for sure; the 8-digit # he posted is the casting # for the center section...

Forget "codes". What matters is THE PARTS THEMSELVES. Pop the cover off and look. Get the gear ratio and determine whether or not it's a posi... most likely not, just based on production #s, but who knows, it might have acquired one somewhere along the way, or started out as one but is just totally wore out now. Pull an axle and count the splines.

Once you do those things, which all together will take less than 15 minutes unless you're slow like me and stop too many times for cold ones during the process besides in which case it might take 20, you will KNOW for CERTAIN just EXACTLY what you have on your hands to work with. Much easier to get it right the first time when you're not "guessing" stuff.
