Not Shifting when warm/hot
Not Shifting when warm/hot
Hey guys, I have an 89 Firebird formula with 305 and Auto trans (700r4 i believe)
two years ago I had to replace the shift cable because the towing company broke the hanger (they didn't have the tools needed to undo it) Car was towed because one of the tilt steering retaining bolts came loose and wedge itself in while I was coming around a turn, I was forced to break the column to turn. In any case, The car hasn't been working right since. last year the transmission just refused to work, period. I let it sit for a while and this past summer I had to move it, I started it up and it worked. But whenever it is running for a period of time and the transmission is warmed up it will not shift, even if I move the shifter manually into the different gears. It also will not shift into OD or D from 0 I have to be going about 25 before I can shift it from 2nd into D. Are the Synchros bad? or is this a TV cable adjustment that is seriously needed. If it starts slipping and not shifting I can turn the car off, wait 2 mins and proceed for a bit as if nothing happened.

Re: Not Shifting when warm/hot
I just went through this. The reason mine was slipping was because it wasn't downshifting when I came to a stop. Slipping in all gears when hot.
The ultimate conclusion: broken stuff inside the trans. $1400 later, all good.
