Leak from VSS???

In my years around thirdgens and the past 8 years I have spent around Jeeps I have learned a lot about vehicles. Building engine, rears, interiors, tons... to much. But I dont know Jack about transmissions.

This vert I got is in great shape but has a few minor issues. One of which is a tranny leak at the rear of the tranny. It doesnt look to be where the tail housing bolts on. It actually looks to be at the VSS sensor? Is there fluid in that part? Can the VSS leak or does it need to be coming from somewhere else? I apparently need a VSS because my speedo/odo isnt working. Its plugged in but not working. Between that not working and the leak Im guessing the VSS is shot. Can anyone school me on this a little bit please.

Re: Leak from VSS???

Short answer is yes, the VSS/speedo cable adapter can leak. It's got an o-ring on the outside.

Take it out (as in completely remove it from the car, disconnecting the wire harness), and hook a DMM to the terminals in the plug. Take the gear off of the shaft, and spin it with a drill. You should get an AC voltage reading out of it. If you do, it's good. Replace the o-ring on it and put it back in. Then go to the Electronics section and search for info on code 24 (VSS malfunction).

Re: Leak from VSS???

I just pulled it and I think I found the problem at least for the leak. It was barely torqued in there. I don't know the torque value it should be at but I know it came out with the slightest one handed tug with a 3/8 ratchet. Backed it off a few revolutions and it dropped right out. Seems it was never put in right.... I have read a few threads on here where they were in so tight people had to remove the tail housing and tap these out from the inside.

Re: Leak from VSS???

Yes they will leak. I replaced mine about 2 years ago. It was just the o-ring that was scuffed for some reason. I just went and replaced the whole thing as I found one for a few bucks. But they also leak from the back (round metal) part.

oh, just noticed you figured it out. Good news.
