Speedo problems... cable to electronic vss t5 need help asap
So last week I completed a speed density tpi swap in my 89 camaro, I swapped out the 80's dash and cluster in favor of the 90's electric version to make my engine swap plug and play. My car came with 3.08 gears originally and the rear axle was swapped for a 3.08 posi axle, I went through counted the teeth and did the math I know for certain that is the ratio. The t5 was reused, being that from the tranny back nothing has really changed minus the Vss I popped my cable driven setup out of the t5, removed the gear without breaking the retainer plastic (which surprised me) then set it on the new Vss which is a BWD s8301 I believe, problem is the gear did not pop into place like on the cable driven shaft it came off of. Currently I have a Vss error and no speedo output. Are the electronic ones different than the cable driven ones? When I placed the gear on the Vss shaft it didn't seat anywhere it almost popped right out. Am I missing something here? I didn't want to try and pry the shaft from the new sensor since I just paid 100$ for the dang thing but either the shaft is too short or my speedo gear doesn't seat properly on it and is just sliding back
The gear was grey, didn't count the teeth but I believe from what I've read on here its a 21 tooth?
If anyone has done this in the past I would appreciate some advice here, no speedo is quite the pain.

the driven gears are different between cable drive and vss. You need to call patc and see if you can even get a gear if not I think a bullet from a th350 will work with your old gear and shaft converting it to 7/8 so you can use a retrofit vss.

Sounds like a run around, couldn't I just take the gear from a 90s tbi car?

Are these things sized differently? Every picture I've seen they look exactly the same the way they're mounting. Same size and everything. I can't find anyone that sells these things I want clear proof that the cable driven and electronic driven gears are different because I'm not seeing it

you won't find anyone who sells the gears they have been nla for years. This is where I obtained information not sure if I read it correctly or if it is correct.

Alright so for anyone looking for this I just went through hell talkig to 4 different speedo shops, including the one you linked, and 2 dealerships to find that the cable driven gear, and the electronic gear, both a grey 22 tooth gear, are the exact same. No adapter needed, no special gear for 3 years of the camaro or 7 years of the firebird. If you swap from an older cable driven to the newer electronic driven you can reuse the existing gear unless you are swapping rear gears. In my case my retaining clip broke so it doesn't sit where it should, so I have a new one on order but again, direct from gm, the gears are one in the same. The only difference between the two is the cable driven gear sits on a metal shaft protruding from the cable adapter piece bolted to the transmission, and the electronic one sits on the Vss shaft, that's it. If you can manage to save the 20+ year old plastic gear without breaking it you can slap it on the Vss, throw it in and call it a day,
BTW the electronic vss number cross referenced from the gm original is a BWD s8301.
For the t5 you use the more expensive 22mm Vss if you want to use a different brand.
The gm part number for the 22 tooth gear is 14090595
