Transmission Shifts Often
When I'm cruising around at a constant speed my car will shift up and down often if it's near a shift point. I notice it most around 30-35 mph and 55-60 mph. Is this something a shift kit would fix or am I way off? The transmission is the only area I haven't really touched yet so I've been itching to start building it up anyway.

The only solenoid in there is the torque converter lockup. Could be tv adjustment or governor.

I don't know how to tell if the torque converter is locking and locking. It jumps maybe 200-300 RPMs. I adjusted the TV cable last night. It seems to have helped a little but it didn't fix it.

Re: Transmission Shifts Often
I read the article and learned a lot but I'm still not sure what's going on. Here is what I observe after setting the TV cable...
-Shifts are smooth but the RPMs stay right around 2500 when shifting.
-RPMs jump 200-300 with steady or light throttle.

Re: Transmission Shifts Often
From what I have read shifting should cause a greater RPM change than 200-300 so I'm thinking it could be the torque converter locking and unlocking. How can I verify this?

Re: Transmission Shifts Often
i think im having the same issue... when i let off the throttle it drops rpms and then back up. or when very light throttle. so i as well could use an answer. the only time it doesnt is when accelerating. cruising or letting off the throttle the rpms fluctuate and can feel it cut and go cut and go. same issue?

Pull the connector out of drv side of trans and take a drive to see if the problem is still there.
If it doesn't happen and it worries you ,you can install a manual switch on the wire to the TCC that will prevent the lockup (controlled by the ECM ) taking place until you flick the switch.
Alternatively if you want to manually control the lockup yourself you can install the switch on a different wire
so you have full manual control of when lockup takes place

That seems to be the problem. What can I do to fix this so it operates normally instead of using a switch?

Re: Transmission Shifts Often
THe converter lockup is controlled by the ECM. So your problem is likely to be that something is confusing the ECM.
I'd suggest starting with the TPS and MAP sensors; esp the TPS. Make sure the voltage on its "output" lead rises smoothly as the throttle is opened slowly, and doesn't fluctuate or have any sudden jumps as it moves.

seems to be the TPS. i adjusted my tv cable thanks to guidance from steveo and it helped but not fully. my father in law said it was the TPS awhile back so thats got to be your problem as well.

Re: Transmission Shifts Often
I haven't checked out the tps yet. Tomorrow if it isn't pouring all day again. But I did recently change spark plugs and after that it idled at around 700 rpms as opposed to 1000 before. The torque converter also only did it's thing a few times instead of being all over the place.
