ppl that have succesfully welded a 9 bolt BW
Hi,
This is for a posi cone-type BW rear end.
I just wanted to know if people generally weld the spider gears to the cones, then weld the cones to the case ?
I found this link here :
http://mpikas.blogspot.ca/2008/03/re...rner-cone.html
Basically the guy welded the cones to the case...
I just wonder, after this is welded did he re-assemble the diff with the spider and side gears ? or simply left all the gears out and just ran it with the solid cones only ?
I was going to weld mine up, but I was planning on doing this :
First off, weld my sidegears to the cones. (using an axle to keep everything aligned)
Then, weld the cones in as pictured.
Then, re-assemble everything without any spider gears.
I just find that if you only weld the cones, aren't you losing half of your spline engagement ??
Comments please.

Is this going to be a dirt track car? That is the only thing that a welded rear end should be used for. If it's going to be a sreet car then fix it right. Leave the welded rear ends to the dirt tracks.

Its mostly for drag racing. I was quoted a bit over 400 for a drag spool from Aus. But was going to perhaps try to weld it up if anyone had done it succesfully. Right now I'm only spinning one tire in the burnout box for a while till the second one kicks in.
I've driven my old mini-spooled. Camaro around quite a bit and was fine with it... This 9 bolt has axle retention which is a lot safer so I feel comfortable locking it up.
So... ?

The NHRA does not allow welded rear ends for a good reason. They are not safe. Even if you don't loose an axle when the weld breaks it can turn you into the wall or into the car in the other lane.

Ok I am pretty sure I'm going with the Australian full spool, saves 10 pounds of rotating mass.
But for the sake of this thread, do you guys typically weld just the cones or both the gears and the cones?
