mechanical to electronic speed sensor

Looking for some knowledge in transmission conversions. I got a 92 camaro that had a 700r4. I put a t5 in it a couple months ago. The t5 has a mechanical cable driven speedo and the 92 was electronic. Im keep the factory gauges so I need something to plug in the factory harness. Anyone know of a conversion kit I could buy. I know they sell them but would they work the factory harness and gauges. Ive always seen them on cars with aftermarket gauges. Or my next thought was go to junkyard and find a t5 in a v6 car and take the tailhousing off the trans and the speed sensor and possibly the reluctor ring if there different.

To what extent have you put effort into buying a replacement VSS for a 1990 to 1992 F-body?

Re: mechanical to electronic speed sensor

2 easy steps:

1. Unbolt cable-type speedo gear sleeve.

2. Bolt in VSS.

VSS on the left, wore-out chinesium POS stock speedo gear sleeve on the right.

How hard can it be?

Don't know; just from some one of the half-dozen or so junk T-5s I still have laying around and haven't thrown in the trash yet. I'd guess somewhere around 88 to 92 but could be earlier.

Re: mechanical to electronic speed sensor

Sorry, not too interested in selling any of em; mostly because, I'd have to find one first. Which I might well have already given or thrown them away in my periodic junk clear-out jags. Not a task I'm really interested in.

That pic has a file date in April 2003.

There should be NO SHORTAGE of em in S trucks and such. It's nothing special.

The sensor is eeeezie; the hardest part will be getting the right driven gear to match whatever gear your car has. Not that that will necessarily be "hard", just, might have to look at ALOT of em before you find whatever you need.

So I cant use the factory gear that was on the mechanical sensor? Do you if I jist have to find the right gear or would I need to change the relucter ring also?

S-trucks got the reluctor wheel and e-pickup VSS years before the F-bodies did. And they didn't get the 4000 pulse VSS in the T5 in their different models throughout the years. So it's special enough that he needs one for a 90-92 F-body.

Third gens didn't get a reluctor ring; they had a speedo-gear driven VSS. If your speedo gears are correct, you literally need to unbolt the driven gear and sleeve and bolt a correct VSS in.
