Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
We are hoping to do a 4.3L swap soon, and we got thinking about how to mount the torque arm to the transmission. There is no spot to mount the front of the arm to the transmission, so we dont know what to do. Are there any LS Swap guys that could have a possible solution to the problem? How are you guys mounting the front end of the arm? Do we have to make a custom bracket, or swap out the very end of the transmission? Any information on the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Or you buy a kit to mount the arm on a cross member

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
I use a custom arm with its own crossmember.
Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
This, or if the 4L60E is a later version with a six bolt tail, look for a 4th gen 6 bolt F body tail (check Ebay) and use the 4th gen torque arm mount. Depending on what your 4L60E is out of, you may have to change the output shaft also.

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
The truck had an electronic speedo as well. We haven't figured out what to do about the speedo yet, as the 88' has a cable and the truck has an electric speedo. Would swapping the tail end of the transmission to a 4th gen Camaro affect this at all as well?

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
get ready to pay for the tail shaft housing.... aint cheap as im in the same boat of looking.
Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
I believe the tail housing on that (S-10) transmission is the same as what came on a 4th gen Camaro. Below is a 4th gen Camaro tail shaft, yours should look the same. nfdw~~60_57.JPG)
Do some research, and I think you will be able to find some kind of an interface that will allow you to convert the late 4L60E speed sensor output to mechanical.

Thanks for all the help guys. Sorry for the late reply been busy. I think that we have a general idea of what we want to do now. As for the speedometer, I will look into that further with the information given.

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
Does anybody know the length of the tailstock of a 700R4 transmission out of a third gen? We did not have a motor and trannie with the car and not sure if the driveshaft is fitting into the 4L60E far enough. Thanks
Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
700R4, 4L60 and 4L60Es are the same length and use the same driveshaft
With the engine swap you can move the drivetrain forward/back to suit, so decide where you want it and worry about the driveshaft last
The 4L60E will output a 40ppr signal which a newer 4.3 PCM will understand, then you need an electric to mechanical driver box for the speedo. Cable-X comes to mind. IMHO, swapping the speedo to an electric version is better
Personally, I wouldnt worry about the torque arm mount on the tailhousing. Fabbing a simple bracket to attach the factory TA mount to the trans mount flange is not hard

having this problem too. could go full red neck and use 2 u bolts to the tailshaft. I'm going to try and fab something I guess.

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
I disagree. Locate the 4L60 on the factory 700R-4 mount, so the shifter cable and speedo as well as the trans mount and torque arm will all match up, then the back of the engine will be where it should, and you really don't want to ever move any engine forward of that.

I just said screw it and bought Spohn's crossmember mounted adjustable torque arm. I like the design better than tailshaft mounted.

just out of curiosity, you aren't going to try to use a 4X4 transmission, are you? the output shaft is shorter and it has a housing designed to mate up with the transfer case..

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
Cant believe this thread is still going. Scraped the 4.3L idea as the computer is not able to run independantly without all the interior circuitry. Thinking LS swap now though, so the speedo stuff still comes to mind.

Re: Torque Arm to a 4L60E Transmission
no 4x4 it was a fbody 4l60e, drive shaft fits the same as the 700 did. I wonder how I'm going to get my speedo to work. plug is different on tailshaft and could not swap them. duck tape and GPS speedo on my smart phone will have to work until I figure it out.
