Gearing

I have a 89 trans am with the lb9 and has the stock 2.73 rear end true it helps with mpg but it really makes it hard for my car to get moving what is a good gear to put in so that I have good acceleration but not so low that I cant cruse at 70 or 80

You could go with 3.08's with your current series II carrier, but that wouldn't help your situation much. If you go series III, I'd recommend 3.23's.

If you're unfamiliar with gears/rear ends, check the following FAQ.

Re: Gearing

Allot of guys try to find a used rear end that has the parts they are looking for(gear ratio, posi.) and that usually is reasonably priced and that is why they do it that way. If you decide to rebuild it from scratch with new parts (expensive)check out post #38 in the link posted above. As it says the posi/locker (carrier) is totally up to you and they do make lockers that are less expensive than the Eaton Posi. and of course buying the support cover is totally a option.
