Shift up on automatic?

I have a 1992 RS with a 350. Whenever I hit about 50 in the car a shift up light comes on. I had a GM mechanic say that the steering colum is probably switched from a manual. But I aslso don't have the tachometer working so I don't know hos many rpms I am at. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Re: Shift up on automatic?

if everything is working properly and the car isn't acting crazy because of it, take the bulb out from behind the cover, afaik all the thirdgens(at least the later ones) have the "shift up" lens in place, but if it was an automatic car a bulb was never installed(i don't even know if the wiring is in place to put a bulb in)

it almost sounds like that car was originally a 5 speed car, maybe when someone swapped the 350 they put in an auto tranny too

Re: Shift up on automatic?

The car has always been an automatic. I know the steering was swapped because my original starter is under the dash and I have the key I have a new turner. ( may not be proper but its extra security can't steal without both keys). But I don't know if if the rpms are normal when the light comes on. I don't think the rpm or the gas tach is in...

Re: Shift up on automatic?

was the gauge cluster swapped at the same time as the steering column, they are two separate pieces that merely bolt near each other, and have almost nothing to do with each other

if the cluster was swapped it may be hooked up wrong, pull it out and make sure everything is connected properly

you should also be able to tell if your car is over revving for the gear it should be in, try manually shifting through the auto gears and make sure it shifts every time you click it up one, if its shifting fine, pull the bulb

Re: Shift up on automatic?

Just take the bulb out. It's not supposed to be installed on an automatic.
