Re: 87 firebird 700R4 problem

How old is the trans/how many miles? Has it ever been run low on fluid or overheated? Does it shift late under low throttle, normal throttle, full throttle? There are a bunch of diagnostic questions that will need to be looked at. Are you sure the TV cable has been adjusted correctly? Did this just happen or did it slowly evolve over time? Has any work been done to something else that may be related?

You may want to search through the transmission threads to do some research and also provide as much detail as you can think of to the board here and you might see some more feedback from the crowd.

Good luck, don't get frustrated, and it will all come together!

ok to answer the questions in order, im assuming its original trans, i just got car a few weeks ago guy told me body had 240k motor had 102k didnt say anything about trans so i would assume it too has 240k, as long as i had it i never ran low on fluid, fluid has no burning smell, it does it under normal throttle sometimes i lift my foot off gas and it will shift, i think tv was adjusted correctly (by pushing button and retracting all the way back then open to WOT it ratcheted out) i did loosen it up a little and it shifted into drive a little earlier, so maybe it still needs adjustment. i never did any work to it im gonna drop pan and change fluid/filter today see how that goes. another member said i might have a bad governor valve? 1st-2nd is fine its 2nd to drive thats late

ok i got an update, i think i got the TV cable reset to the factory setting i didn't tweek it in any way. i just got back from a test drive around my neighborhood, and its shifting from first to 2nd fine but still shifts from 2nd to drive at 2000 (this is normal driving). if i punch it, shes shifting from 2nd to drive at 2500. its not slipping and fluid does not smell burnt (i have yet to drop pan and change it). the car also feels like its moving as fast as rpms are reading so i think that's a good sign. are there any other suggestions?
