T5 rebuild labor ?

I know some of you here could rebuild your own T5 but i am unsure if i am confident to do the same......So i was wondering what should i expect to pay (ballpark) for labor to have someone do it for me? Just labor is what i am looking for a quote, Not parts. I am most certain the box i have is a straightforward rebuild, No gear replacement. TIA

If you can find somebody, figure on about 4 - 5 hrs @ $80/hr; something in the $300 - 350 (ish) range.

Re: T5 rebuild labor ?

Thanks for the info guys..... big gear head....It actually does not look too intimidating, But something about tackling it for the first time and wanting to get the car on the road asap might be pressuring me. I was looking at some how to books and cd`s on ebay that walk you through..hmmmm maybe

If you read over the instructions a few times from the link Big Gear Head posted and take your time, it's pretty straightforward. I did mine a couple years ago and it wasn't that hard. Took me about 5 hours or so. First time I ever took on a transmission rebuild too.

You will need a dial indicator or a depth micrometer, or something to measure the bearing preload. You will also need a press and bearing seperator to disassemble the main shaft. Getting the bearings off of the cluster gear can be a little hard, but if you are good at problem solving you will figure it out.

I bought a dial indicator with base for my rebuild and the bearing separator. I didn't have a shop press at the time, but I was able to do the job with a bench vise, some wood blocks, and a BFH. I set the shaft in the separator and set it on top of the vise jaws with the main shaft extending down between the jaws. Used the wood blocks to cushion the hammer blows and to catch the shaft on. Couple good whacks and it separated easily. I used the same basic setup to put it all back together.
