i found a 700r4 from a 94 caprice police car for cheap and was wondering how difficult it would be to install in my 82 camaro with a carb'd 355. what all will i need to get to install it? the car was setup for a manual tranny before.

so i basically just wanna know how to install a 700r4 in my camaro thats setup for a standard tranny and what all i need to get.

 

94 and newer cars and 93 and newer trucks are the 4L60-E, controlled by a trans. control module or a powertrain controlled module.

Older ones are the 700-R4 A.K.A. 4L60. The ECM controls torque converter lockup and that's it.

An aftermarket controller to run the trans. alone isn't cheap.

 

If the tranny you found is actually a 700R4 and not a 4L60E then you will need to make sure it has the correct tail housing with the 3 holes, needs the correct speedo setup if you want the speedo to work. You'll also need to set up the engine with the tv cable brackets (super important) and you'll need a flexplate and shifter and cable and crossmember. I'm not sure about the driveshaft.

 

if tranny is 1994,it will be electronic control version as stated above and a lot more complicated to install than 1993-earlier non electronic version.I installed a 1985 caprice 700r4 in my originally manual '82 z28 using parts from 700r4 thirdgens and used a thirdgen tailhousing on the caprice tranny.
