WC T5 lost fifth gear today

My girl was driving home at about 45 mph, when she went to shift into 5th gear she says she heard a "pop" and said she felt it a little in the shifter ****. She said it wasn't very loud at all. After that, no 5th gear.
I drove it ('89 RS) a short distance and indeed all other gears seem to work fine including reverse.
She needs this car for work, she only drives about 2 miles there and 2 back.
Question is, should I ground the car or will she be able to drive short distances until I can do something about it?
My '86 is so close to being done! The poor '89 has had a rod knocking for 6 months or so and has held in there like a trooper!!

Have you never driven anything with performance gearing and no overdrive? Once you've tried overdrive you're addicted, but really it is no big deal to run around at 2500 or 3500 revs. Especially when it is no more than 2 miles. I was hoping for pics of the failed parts.

Answer that question with my sig.
I can't tear into it tonight and I need to know if it's likely the shifter or if maybe a key or shear pin or whatever holds that gear might have broken. Also the odds that a loose piece in the trans might get into the other gears and smoke the whole trans.
Given the fact that a connecting rod has been knocking for over 6months I'm not going to be tooling around at 4k rpm!
She is easy on the car, but has to drive to work in the morning.
