Transmission Fluid
I am currently building my 700r4 from Dana from Pro-Built Automatics. He recommends some Liquid Engineering product. They don't really sell this in stores and it has been a hassle to try to get ahold of a representative from the company to sell it to me. I don't want to go through this hassle every time I need a quart or two of oil. Is there any recommendations for transmission fluid for a built trans? As far as a newly built transmission is there a break-in period like engines where you shouldn't use synthetic for the first 500 miles or is this just a myth? Something that I can pick up at a auto parts store or something more readily available would be nice. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Re: Transmission Fluid
Nice looking car. I have a friend who rebuilds transmissions. He told me the reason automatics last so much longer today is because of the quality of modern ATFs. For him, this translates into less rebuilding business & less $$$.
So, being bored I did some web research (I'm a fairly good researcher). After researching, I suspect any good quality ATF is good AFT. Royal Purple Max (any auto parts store), TCI Max (Jegs or Summit), or Redline (Auto Barn, Amazon, etc.) are performance ATFs that are easy to find.
Redline has a range of ATFs including "LIghtweight Racing ATF" designed for drag racing.
Lucas Oil claims its "Lucas Semi-Synthetic ATF" was designed to give the smooth, precise shifts needed by ET racers...
Unless there is something specific about your type of transmission, I think that Royal Purple, TCI Max, or Redline will work fine in a performance vehicle. Pick one and try it for a few thousand miles to see how it feels for the type of driving you do. Just my opinion & worth about

Re: Transmission Fluid
Thanks for your very informative response. I appreciate it. I have heard alot of good things about the royal purple ATF. I think I am leaning in that direction. We will have to see how it goes. I think I am sold on that for now. Thanks again for your sweet researching skills.

Re: Transmission Fluid
Ask him to give you a brand name / part # / model name / yadda yadda yadda and write it down.
Buy a coupla extra cans of whatever that is, from wherever you find it, whenever that is. Then save that site to your favorites so you can go back to it when you need more.

Re: Transmission Fluid
I used Royal Purple Racing full syn ATF in my Built TH350 trans, builder gave it the ok. Nice stuff but a bitch to read on the stick when new fresh fluid. When its a new trans you don't like to guess if it looks right. Even sand blasted dip stick to try n help.
Id use the RedLine racing next time just for the standard red color.
Jegs is where I got it, they sell the big 5gal jugs that summit didn't, don't have to be knickled and dimed on quarts.

Re: Transmission Fluid
Use Amsoil, as this has been the best synthetic fluid to use for years, and I highly recommend it. Next would be Red Line. The breakin period is the first 10 miles manually upshift the transmission with no more than a 1/3 throttle. DO NOT downshift it till you come to a complete stop, then start the process again. This will get all the air out of the transmission and the higher line pressures will keep it from slipping to much. Now be back at the shop and check the fluid level, it will be down 1/2 to 1 quart. Top it off and the next 10 miles leave it in OD and nothing more than 1/2 throttle now and then. Now be back at the shop and check the fluid level again. The last 10 miles occasionally 1/2 to 2/3 to 3/4 throttle. After this you are ready to make a blast. MAKE SURE that the TV cable is tight at WOT from inside the vehicle. Check this 2 or 3 times on the test to make sure it is tight and has not moved at all. I do not care for Royal Purple. Products that are highly advertised.... Usually fall short. The fluid that I recommended to you is the Lubrication Engineers Monolec 7500 transmission oil at www.le-inc.com/

Right there is the reason I am using Amsoil and why I will continue to use it. Thanks Dana.

Re: Transmission Fluid
You order it from your area sales rep and they either sell it to you by the case or quart. If they don't have it in their stock, they drop ship it to you from one of many regional warehouses. Comes in sealed quarts like any oil you buy off the shelf in the parts store.
I have never heard of any Amsoil salesmen buying drums or bulk tanks and dividing it up into bottles to sell to customers.
