I have a friend that wants to install a T-56 in his 85 Trans Am. We are wanting to know if we have to get another drive shaft or any mods to his drive shaft? He had a T-5 in his car.

 

No. All the same, dimensionally. Same length, same u-joint caps, same slip yoke, same same same. Too easy.

No.

Aluminum ones didn't appear in these cars until around 87 or 88.

Then the 4th gen cars had Al DSs, but those are different again; same dimensions, but different construction. There were a couple of varieties.

The OP however will have a steel one unless it's been changed.

 

hmm strange. i thought T56 4th gens had aluminum driveshafts.

 

Yes in fact they did, as I said here.

However the OP isn't working on a 4th gen; he has a 85 model. Those drive shafts are NOT aluminum.

 

the 85 belongs to a friend and I am helping him out. He is also helping me to get a 87 GTA that needs work.
