Car: 88 Sport Coupe Camaro
Engine: V6 2.8
Transmission: Borg-Warner T-5
Axle/Gears: RPO/GU6: 3.42
speedometer cable replacement - question
Car is 1988 Camaro V6 with manual transmission.
Pitch of the sound coming from the existing cable waxes and wanes with speed of car.
Severity seems to be random. Sometimes hardly notice it. Other times a mild "chirping." Other times it sounds like a rooster with his nuts caught in a blender.
New cable is on the way from Summit.
Any pitfalls I should be aware of in replacing the old cable?
Just pop the old one out of the back of the instrument cluster, and out of the transmission, and plug-in the new one?
Any special tricks to this "just pop it out" method?
Any thoughts on lubrication of the new cable from Summit?
Should I expect it to arrive in "dry" condition?

Be cautious when inserting the new cable into the trans. You don't want to pierce or tear the little seal in there.

I had the hardest time getting up there under dash etc to disconnect speedo cable from back of cluster, take your time/patience etc. I took out driver seat so I get a better position to see from underneath dash & had shop light as well. PITA for me, best wishes on your project

I already have the dash pad removed and everything exposed to get at the fasteners for the cluster. Frankly the interior of the car is pretty much "stripped" except for the bare minimum accoutrements needed to drive the car legally. I've been driving it in that condition on-and-off.
Its like my daily demolition-derby driver.
Big trucks move out of my way when I appear in front of them.
I kid you not.
A good fella at a friend's shop has been trying to chase down the water leaks at the firewall and cowl. Seems like every time one gets plugged another rears its head. Until we can get that sorted for sure, the dash pad, dash fascia, and all consoles and carpets are gonna sit in the basement.
We're "going back in" after more firewall leaks probably just after Labor Day.
I'm hoping the good fella won't mind doing the speedo cable at the same time.
Getting behind the gauge cluster is going to be simple.
I'm wondering how "tricky" it is to handle the OTHER end of the cable.

Will the inner cable slide out of the outer sheath without disconnecting the outer sheath from the tranny?
It would be nice to pull the inner cable out and inspect/lube (replace?) it before committing to having the body-shop guys start wrenching on the tranny, and trying to route a new sheath which will have to "learn" the bends down to the tranny.
