trans wont shift
Ok, first off I am mechanically inclined but not familiar with some terms or parts, although ill do my best to describe what's going on.
I've slowly been working on my firebird for about 3 months now just trying to get it back to running and driving condition because it wasn't when I got it.
its an 1989 firebird I'm going to assume it was the base model seeing as I've done some homework on the car and it had a 2.5 v6 or something to that effect lol.
Well some where down the road some one decided it needed more power and put a sbc 400 in it on an auto th350.
So far I changed the starter and it DID start at that point so to evaluate its running condition. I let it run for about 30 mins and checked the trans fluid and when I wiped it, it looked trashed so I got another th350 that was used and guaranteed to work.
I then borrowed a cherry picker and pulled my motor and trans. I pulled the old lock up trans off. the replacement is a non lock up and so is the replacement tq converter.
when I finally got the motor and trans put back in it took me a long time to get spark I couldn't figure it out turns out it was just the plug that goes from the bottom of the distributor to the upper part of the distributor, and it fired up and ran again.
now here is where my problems begin...
The whole time ive had the new trans in the car, its bracket that the shift cable attaches to, the one that allows your shifter to change gears, no longer changes gear I cannot get it to rotate now and I cant figure out why.
I tried rocking the car a couple of times and then using a wrench to try and shift it but it just wont go. now strangely enough I can freely push it as it sits it appears to not be in park but either reverse or neutral.
any clue?????????

Re: trans wont shift
thanks a million man. that's was the problem, it was stuck on the far side of the tooth. the bracket I had for my shift cable wasn't the right one, so I had to modify it by cutting it up and welding it back together with a secondary bracket off of it to make the cable line up, but it works as long as you don't try to loosen that first bracket from the trans or it gets stuck in park again. I guess its true what they say you learn something new every day.
