Whining Noise in the rearend ??

I have a 92 RS and it is whining from the rear end like a siren... I checked and replaced the fluid. thewre wasnt much in there a little more then a quart id say. Now it does sound better but it is still making the sound so my question is What could it have damaged for this to still happen? The bearings? Would it be better to replace them or swap out for complete rear end??? thanks...

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

The easiest thing for you to do would probably be to swap the whole rear end. If you don't know how to set up a rear end then you probably don't need to get into it. I would say that the gears are probably worn from low oil. There could be some bearings that are bad, or the pinion nut could have come loose. There is no way of knowing without getting inside it and looking at the parts.

Hard to say without knowing approx location but it could be the pinion bearing or wheel bearings. Also could be the gear set if they are damaged.

Is it leaking out the pinion seal?

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

okay when I change the fluid the gears looked OK nothing really seem to be too bad or to worn there was no leaking from the cover after I put it back together today there was a little fluid around where the u joint connects to the tranny but I don't know if that's new or old or what it is there's no dripping anywhere when I park itI was thinking that from the low fluid that the bearings were worn and were damaged possibly.
OK. If I do swap it out should I just do the rear end or the whole thing axels and all. And I know I asked before what was compatible but I was wondering if a 10 bolt from a Chevelle or nova say is the same and could I use that

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

The ONLY rear ends that will fit are 3rd and 4th gen F body rear ends. NOTHING else will work without major work.

You might have a bad pinion bearing or the pinion nut might have got loose.

Thanks a lot ... OK the pinion bearing .. is it a do it yourself project for a novice .. please keep I mind I am very capable and not one of those non mechanically inclined people I just never worked on a rear end before and honestly whatever your answer is I am most likely gonna give it a shot. Lol unless you say you wouldn't do it at home ....thanks again

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

You will have to remove the axles and then the differential. When you remove the differential there will be a thick shim, somewhere between .220 and .260 inch thick, on each side. Be sure that you do not get them mixed up. Also do not mix up the bearing caps. They must go on EXACTLY the same way that they came off. Then you can remove the pinion. I would not just replace one bearing, I would replace both at the same time. You can get a pinion bearing kit from Randy's Ring & Pinion that will have everything that you need, including the pinion seal, crush spacer, pinion nut and shims. You will have to crush the spacer until you get 20 INCH pounds of preload on the bearings. This takes a bit of work, and you will need a small torque wrench that can read from 0 to 30 inch pounds to measure the preload.

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

to my Craigslist travels I've come across two rear ends and my question is about compatibility one of them is from a 90 something Impala and the otherfrom the 2002 SS my question is will the impala one fit? it seems to have the same measurements is mine and the other is that the SS is a 2002 and is a disc brake rear end and a six speed so if it will fit what would I have to change
And and from a 1990 s-10 would any of these swap or need modification ..

The '93 to '02 F body rear ends are about 4 inches wider than the '82 to '92 F body rear ends, but they still bolt in. You will have to make adjustments to the wheel backspacing to make the later rear end work in the earlier car.

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

The pinion bearing kit only has the bearings, seal, nut, spacer, shims. No gear. You have to get the gears in a set. You can not replace the pinion without replacing the ring gear too.

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

You will know if the axle bearings are bad when you pull the axles out. The axle is the inner race for the axle bearing, so if the bearings are worn the axles will also be worn. The rollers in the bearings run directly on the axle shaft. This requires replacing the axles too.

Did you check out the link that I put in post number 14?

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

Ok I am about to start the bearing work and a friend says he has a rear end from a 98 ss ...Im thinking that is disk brake and 6 speed and also wider like you said. Would it be more practical to swap the rear end I can get it for next to nothing would it work if so what else would i need to do???? brakes etc.

Re: Whining Noise in the rearend ??

Do a search on here to see pictures of 3rd gen cars with 4th gen rear ends. See if you like the way the tires sit under the car. If you can live with that then swapping the rear end will be the easiest and cheapest way to go.
