Pinion is not deep enough. Add some shim to the pinion and check it again. I'd put about .005 in it. Be sure to set the pinion bearing preload and backlash correctly each time.

BGH, I'm learning to read patterns
Your diagnosis is because the pattern is too close to the toe, yes?

No, I don't look at heel and toe, I look at root to face. Notice that the pattern on the coast side is all the way out to the face of the tooth. The drive side is a little more centered, but still favoring the face. The pinion needs to go in deeper to get the pattern to move more to the root of the tooth. When the root to face pattern is correct the heel and toe are usually correct too. You can adjust that a little with backlash.

What about now?

Needless to say I needed some more tools to do this.

Re: Ring Pinion Patterns 10-bolt (check please)

Now it's too deep. Notice how the pattern has a long sharp line at the root of the tooth and it tapers upward toward the face of the tooth. You want the root and face of the pattern to be the same length with curved ends that don't favor the root or face. Take about .005 out of the pinion shim and try again.

Look at the pictures in your first post. Notice how the pattern has a long sharp line at the face of the tooth. Now the pattern has a long sharp line at the root of the tooth. You need to get it in the middle of these.

Be sure that you set the bearing preload and backlash the same each time you do this. Stick an axle in it to turn everything when you check the pattern. Turn it several rotations in both directions.

Damn! What a PITA! Now I understand why people are reluctant to try this themselves. Ok. hopefully 3's a charm. Though I don't feel too good about this one either. I'm shimming in the smallest increments I have. Does the fact that these are used gears make any difference? Backlash seems good every time though. Right about .08.

Re: Ring Pinion Patterns 10-bolt (check please)

Yes, used gears does make a difference. I didn't know that they were use. In that case pay close attention to the coast pattern and don't worry about the drive pattern. How much did you move it, because it looks like it went too far again. Notice how the coast pattern looks like it is on the face side again. There is one picture of the coast side that looks like it is covering the tooth pretty even, but the others look like they are on the face side.

One other thing, you are using too much marking compound. Only paint 3 teeth that are next to each other and let the other teeth clean the compound off of the pinion as it goes around.
