PATC Power Gear for 700r4

PATC Power Gear for 700r4
Looks like my 700r4 is going to get rebuilt. I'm wondering if anyone has installed this PATC 6 pinion planet gear or as they call it "POWER GEAR". I like what they have to say about changing the gear ratios in first and second gears. I'm trying to get some real life feed back.
My 87' Formula is in the low 12's now and if I could get .2-.3 tenths off that with this gear and a new converter that would be great.
So if anyone has some experience with the part from PATC I'd love to hear it.
Thx,
Tom

Interesting idea, I haven't ruled something like that out. I could also swap in a 350 or 400. I think it would cost about as much to build a 200r4 as it would 700r4 without the so called "power gear" up grade. Just trying to find someone that has actually put one of these gears in and what their result was.

Re: PATC Power Gear for 700r4
Year ago there were some comparison test made between a 700R4 and 2004R all using the same torque converter in the test and the 700R4 used the 27 spline input shaft so that the only difference would be the transmission. In all three cases (one being a low 13 sec. vehicle, one a mid 12 sec. vehicle and one a high 11 sec. car) All three had similar results, the 2004R being 1/10th quicker and 1 mph faster on average. A good torque converter will get you much more than that (3 -7 tenths) and at a cheaper price. The better gear ratio of the 2004R was not the only reason that the 2004R was quicker and faster, the lighter weight and smaller diameter of the 2004R gear train was a factor also. Going from a 2.73 rear end gear ratio to a 3.73 gear ratio will get you at the most apx. 2/10ths. in the quarter mile. So going to a 2.84 gear set would get you a 1/10th at the very most. Unless someone gives you one of these gear sets, save your money.

Re: PATC Power Gear for 700r4
Thank you that's great information. Right now in in the early stages of deciding what I'm going to do. I just rebuilt the engine a couple years ago and when I did I moved the power curve up a little. I was recently shifting around 6,000-6,300 to get the rpm's back into the mid 4,400 range. Then I started having issues with my trans. It started having delayed upshift and neutraling out when I would let off the gas instead of up shifting. When the trans fluid is cold it really dosen't want to shift. Anyway, I checked out tv cable it's ok, drained the fluid , it looks fine , pulled the valve body and didn't find any broken springs, pulled the govenor valve and it looks and moves fine. The only thing I found was when I sprayed the valve body off you could see tiny particles of metal in draining out of the valve body. So I figure a rebuild is sooner than later. Then I found the "power gear" and thought if it does what they say that and a new converter should knock off a few tenths. I'm currently running a coan converter from the mid 90's. Anyway thats where I'm at. Would love to hear from someone that's actually used one of these gears or someone that knows someone that has to see if it's worth that amount of money. Again thanks for your thoughs I'll definatly keep them in mind before I spend any money.

I have one built and ready to install.
Tracks are closed, so I cannot document the gains or losses until next April or so.

going to the 2.84 first gear at your power level its going to slow it down(assuming your car hooks excellent at the track)
now... if you had 650hp or more that gear would totally help.
imo get a converter and you should see good gains in that.
I been eyeing these patc converters(mr-1) with lock up seems very good quality.
im actually curios if anyone has tried this converter and the results.
