Re: converter qs????

A stock high-stall factory converter is the absolute minimum you would want to run with that. And it's going to drive a whole lot better with more stall.

Re: converter qs????

A general rule is the converter stall should be at the engine's peak torque rpm. You would need to know where that will be. The cam certainly has an affect on this but there is so much more to it than that. Sofa suggested a different cam. Think about what he's telling you. Beware that with the wrong grind, you end up with a very narrow torque curve and actually lose total average torque and power.

BTW, what do you mean .480 lift at .50? That doesn't make sense. For best advice, try to give us either a part number for the cam so we can look it up or, give us specific and more complete specs.

Re: converter qs????

I have been away for a while and let this thread go. I'm sorry no one else got back to this question. Judging from the specs(low lift/duration ratio), that is a flat tappet cam. You didn't provide lobe separation angle with the specs but with that duration, I would guess it at about 108-110 degrees. For that cam, I wouldn't go less than 3,000 stall, 3,500 would be even better. Too low stall will just make light throttle take off more difficult.

As I have said before, if not in this thread, modern high stall converters are not like the old TCI street fighters we used to deal with. A properly spec'd high stall converter from someone Edge or Vigilante, to name just two of many options, is not going to just freewheel at low rpms like the old school high stalls did. At light throttle, you will hardly know the stall speed isn't stock, until you lay on the throttle and the converter flashes to it's rated stall speed. The higher stall speed just allows the engine to breath a little easier at idle and low speed cruise. It's alot more forgiving of large cams with low LSA and late intake valve closing. Especially large flat tappet cams that naturally waste pressure at low rpms. I just installed a 3,500 Edge converter behind my big hyd roller cam(240/240 @.050, 290/290 adv .560/.560 lift 112LSA) small block and it drives great.
