Advice on junk yard T5 (pics)
Advice on junk yard T5 (pics)
Hi, I picked up a T5 from Pull A Part today (50% off, yay!!!). It came out of a 1990 RS with the LO3 and it's a World Class from looking at the front bearing. I figured I'd pull it apart really quick to see if I wanted to keep it or return it. I have attached some pictures the guts of it with the tail housing and the top plate off. Can anyone with some experience with these take a look and let me know if anything stands out? To me it looks beautiful. I saw no chipped teeth or worn edges on any of the gears.
Thanks,
Douglas

Has the classic gear misalignment wear on the clutch gear teeth; you can spot it as a sort of groove about 2/3 of the way down on every tooth, on the drive side. Compare to the appearance of the coast side. Image is attached.
In the same image, look how hard some previous driver was on reverse... ouch.
In the other image, note also how hard someone was on 2nd (to the right of the pic). Observe all the chips out of the synchronizer (aka "slider" or "sleeve"). Compare to 3rd, at the left of the pic.
That said, for a V8 T-5, it's about as good as is left; should work OK at least for a while as long as you keep it full of fluid.
