What trans should i buy

i have an 86 iroc with a 350 SB. the trans is an 87 700R4. 3rd and 4th gear stripped out of it. anyways i dont know a lot about the trannies in these cars. I cant find a 700R4 anywhere here in florida within driving distance besides one that a shop wants $800 for. is there a better option out there. maybe a trusted webiste with a decent price. not tryin to break the bank , but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks for any help provided, dont trash talk anything if i said something polliticlly incorrect or misspelled anything. just shoot me with what ever knowledge you have. this isnt a dick measuring contest, i just need my car to move again so i can drive to missiouri from FL with my 2 kids in March to see my wife graduate basic training.

Re: What trans should i buy

maybe i should also add in for street use/ what ever will get it moving again, with the least ammount of extra parts and or adapters, but is possibly more reliable and easier to find then an 86 700r4

You can get any v8 or 4.3 700r4. You need your tailshaft housing and possibly your throttle valve cable. That needs to be adjusted correctly or you will destroy it. Can't say it will last like a camaro or firebird transmission but it should get you moving. Get the newest 700r4 you can as the earlier models sucked.

But make sure it is a T700/4L60 ( with the TV cable on pass side ) not the identical appearing , but now more common later 4l60E "electronic version that only has elec connectors.
Some sellers don't even know the difference themselves ; esp on CL

The "E" will bolt up fine but you have nothing to control the shifts with ,a long way to Fl in 1st gear

Re: What trans should i buy

ahh ok, yeah i was wondering what the E meant. i saw both online and didnt think about it. thanks alot for the help. so whats the differance between a 700 and a 4L60? is it just the name, or year of it or somethin?

also do i need any gasket kits or anything for the tailshaft or tv cable, i know i can just use some good sealant between the trans and engine. oh how heavy are these trans, can i use make shift car jacks and muscle it out and back in, in my driveway or should i find a lift (i have limited access to a lift if needed but would rather be able to take my time in the driveway)

Re: What trans should i buy

had my eye on this guy a few days... yeah i know CL is really hard to tell if its legit or not, but what do yall think about this add:

"700R4 Overdrive Performance Transmission. 10 Vane Pump, Teflon Front Bushing, .500 Boost Valve, .300 Rev Boost Valve, Corvette Servo, 7 Clutch 3rd-4th (4L65E)Set, "Beast" Sun Drum. Excellent Street/Tow Transmission. I use all name parts: Sonnax, Raybestos, Superior ect. I build these transmissions myself, in my spare time, in my garage and have been doing this for 20+ years. These are hand cleaned, inspected, and meticulously assembled. I am currently running one of my 700's in my 67 Camaro 427 SBC . In all transmissions that I build, I replace all clutches, steels, bushings, t-washers, updates performed Other Performance Options Available. I also build 350's, 400's, 4L60(E)s 4L80E's, Ford AOD-4R70W's, and other Transmissions. NOTE: "E" transmissions have additional expense due to all electronics being replaced with new. Bob 352-***-****. 700R4's $750.00 with core exchange 4L60E's : $875 with core exchange or I can rework yours. IF YOU PAY LESS YOU"RE GETTING LESS!!! "

Sounds like a decent deal. I had a guy do my last trans that had the about the same add. I went to check out his garage as he was a co workers father. Best one yet and only cost me $675. I only have a mostly stock 305 so it really is no strain. Either way, good luck.

Also, a lift can really help. I can do a 700 on a lift in 2 hours. On the ground takes me 10. It is a semi heavy son of a b**CH. Have a friend handy to help. I never do and always get hurt. The 700/4l60 physically is same exterior. Just updated models were called 4l60. A 93 4l60 is a different animal. Bolts in but tcc plug doesn't plug in the same. You don't need sealant between trans and motor. Been awhile but I believe their is a seal for tailshaft housing. Also same with TV cable.

Re: What trans should i buy

Hey thanks again for the help fireburd and vette. Yall have helped greatly in answering my questions. i had doubts tryin to ask for help a second time after my first post on a diff question was rudely shot down and of no help. If there were more people like you here these forums would be outstanding. Wish me luck and hopefully ill be back cruisin around again, and getting ready for a long drive with 2 little devil girls.
