Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

Got a 700R4. Had a leaking speed sensor, so put a new oring on it.

Problem is when reinstalling, the VSS stops when the oring hits the hole in the transmission shaft. The VSS won't press in any further. Had thought of hammering it in, but watched videos where they just push it in easily.

Re: Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

if it's a correct 700-R4 speedo gear on the output shaft, the thirdgen style VSS you posted should mesh with it and fit right in.

If it has a reluctor wheel instead, you have changes to make.

The parts are correct and from the factory. There are no changes to be made.

Re: Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

Did you source the o-ring from GM or did you just match one up?

Perhaps you need to use some trans-gel on the o-ring to get it to slip past the hole opening.

I wouldn't recommend using the retainer to force the sensor into the housing.

Try installing the sensor without the o-ring and see if it goes in.

It might also help to take the transmission out of park and try rotating the drive shaft while you install the sensor.

Re: Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

I misread your post to mean you just got the trans.
Yeah the o-ring is the only item you changed; vaseline or trans. assy. lube it and if it's not going to go in, get a different o-ring.

I would be afraid of stripping the retainer bolt if using it to tighten it in.

I used the GM oring.

Looks like it's the oring.

Re: Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

No; buying a new o-ring is less hassle & time/cost than anything that would re-size or shrink it unless you intend to sand it.

Re: Installing speed sensor (VSS) in transmission

It's got a new correct GM oring on it. Problem is the VSS wouldn't go into the transmission. It stops going in when the oring hits the transmission housing.

Oh. Well in that case, perhaps you should get a piston ring compressor tool and drive it home. I mean, instead of posting the dimensions of your o-ring or PN or pictures of anything.

P.S. These new correct GM orings work on the 700-R4 VSS/speedo housings without any of the issues you describe:
