my 85 iroc need a new tranny?
my 85 iroc need a new tranny?
Hoping for a little help here. I bought my 85 iroc z a few weeks ago. I already knew when i got it that i might have to put a tranny in it but the guy nnever checked anything out so wondering if the problem may be more simple and less costly. When the guy bought the car a few years ago he said that when he drove it it shifted from first to third gear perfect but when shifting into fourth it was like it went back into neutral. No slipping or anything. Well i got ithome and now it wont shift from first. Seems like if i try tk manually shift to first and second it wont and the shifter is kinda stiff and difficult to get there. I have checked the tranny fluid and it is fine. I looked at the linkage on the tranny and the rubber/plastic is a little beat up but looks ok besides that.i have been told the t.v. cable or possibly some sensor but just kind of lost. Its an 85 iroc z with the 305tpi and a 700r4. Also if i do have to change trannys i have had a couple people tell me i should switch it to a 350 turbo or 400. This is my 3rd camaro and i cant wait to drive her. But being a married man with 3 kids i want to go at it in a cost effective way too. Thank you all in advance.

A 350 or 400 will guzzle gas. No overdrive. Also you need a host of swap parts thatll make it more costly then a built 700 which is the direct swap. I don't know what the going rate is for a good used one in your area but they run $150-300 in my area. Something to think about. Also the later model ones (87+) have some updates.

Ok thank you i will stick with the 700r4 than. Another question is i jave found a used one for 350 so far but still looking. Question is it is out of an 88 chevy 2wd truck. Would that be ok or is a truck tranny different? It is from a 2wd and k was told the same but would just have to swap a part from mine to the new one.

Truck tranny can be used if it is 2wd only. You would have to use your tail shaft housing and TV cable as they would be different. 4wd requires a lot of work and I believe the case is different
