4th Gen carrier in a 3rd gen
This has probably be covered many times, but all my searching only turns up complete axle swaps.
I've been offered a '94 Z28 LSD Carrier with 3.23 gears, will this bolt into my 3rd gen 10 bolt rear end. Unfortunately the person who I'm dealing with has very little knowledge of which type of LSD it is. Was hard enough to get the teeth count out of them.
Anyway, is it possible? What brand of diff and I'm likely to find it it?
Thanks in advance!
Andy

The 4th carrier will work in your third gen housing. I'm not sure what was the first year the LSD units were Torsens but I know the later 90's F bodies all had torsen diffs if they were limited slip. Hope this helps.

This is a photo of the unit, I'm guess its an Auburn type with those springs? Also, will a stock 3rd gen casing have clearance for the ABS ring?

it will bolt in if your car has 28 spline axles which it will if the original rear end is in your car.if someone swapped in a 1982-1990 rear into your car then no.
Re: 4th Gen carrier in a 3rd gen
It's an Auburn, which would be my last choice for a differential. You can't tell if it's worn out or if it has much life left in it. When it wears out it is scrap metal, it can't be rebuilt.
The 4th gen has 28 spline axles, so if your rear end has 26 spline axles you will have to upgrade to the 28 spline axles for a '90 to '92.
Just in case you didn't already know, you must set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash when you install this. It is not just a bolt in job.

Cheers for the replies guys,
Zenish - Yep, original '91 rear end still in there, open diff with 3.23 gears according to the RPO code sheet.
Big Gear Head - I hear ya buddy, wouldn't be my first choice but, over here stuff like this doesn't come up at all often and this guys is practically giving it away. Import duties and taxes on a new rear end would be somewhere close to 20 times how much this is going for. The only pro is its out of a 66k car that got written off (frontal damage I believe). Also understand the setting up process. Something that I want to learn how to do, or at least have a stab at!
Appreciate all your replies though guys!
