Need to replace Drivetrain in 89 Camaro RS

Three years ago I came across a cherry 89 RS convertible with only 60k miles. Everyone's pretty sure the mileage is true since this baby is stock and clean as hell. Underneath is spotless. However, my brother drive it and tire up the tranny, so I'm faced with replacing it. (Don't ask. My bro is like a 14 year old. )

My eventual goal is to add as much horsepower as I can with this 305 V8 so if I'm going to have to replace the transmission I might as well go with a more high performance automatic tranny (yes, it sadly has a 700r4).

What type or brands of transmissions should I consider and what rear end should I couple with it to make it improve the 0-60mph range? (Note: I'm more concerned with low end speed and torque than top speed).

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

700r4s are great transmissions.the best overdrive factory trans other the 4l80.the turbo 400 is stronger but not overdrive.the rearends in most v6 camaros are 3.42 gear and the same strength as the v8 rears.thats what i have.ultimately the t56 six speed is the best trans but you asked about automatics.

Have the 700R4 rebuild with stronger after market parts. You are not going to break the rear end or the transmission with a 305. Put a new Eaton Pois or Yukon Dura Grip differential in the rear end.

Thanks. Should I stay with 3.42 in the rear? I only do city driving and some country roads.

I like the 3.42 with the 700R4 transmission. Everyone has their own opinion.

subframe connectors are a very good idea on a high hp convertible.
