And lastly , here's one last shot of the case , and a look at all of the boxes it took to store all of the parts . I know it looks like a LOT of boxes but the parts are wrapped in both heavy brown paper and bubble wrap .This ends my series of pictures of this 700R4 . I do have some photos somewhere of when I replaced all of the external seals/gaskets on the 700R4 that is in the car now , and I'll try to add some of those to this thread soon .
Anyone with any pictures of their 700R4 dealings are most welcome to post them here , a picture truly IS worth a thousand words .....
These next pics are not of the spare high mileage one that I took apart in the previous pics . This is the one that is actually in the car today , running fine as my daily driver . Thing is , I got my car from a friend who owned it since 1990 and left it in a very hot garage almost all of that many years time . Although it has still today less than 90K miles and is totally rust free , the gaskets/seals of the engine/transmission had all dried up to the point where it leaked every fluid a car has . I took it and over a couple years time (hey , old guy here in **** poor health , when I was young I'd have had it done in less than a week ) managed to get it regasketed/resealed to the point of this car leaves not ONE drop of any fluid where it parks .
So anyway , here are a few random shots of yet some more our beloved 700R4
Here are three pictures of what is called the "Sun gear reaction shell" in advertising that I have found . This part seems to be weak enough that the automotive aftermarket has manufactured a more robust copy that they sell as "The Beast" , gotta love the marketing there , eh ?
What a fantastic thread!!! We are gonna rebuild my 700r4 this fall, so this will come in SSOOOOO handy!! Thank you so much for the pictures and details!!!! What a wonderful idea!!! Can't wait to get in there and see why she is waiting so long to shift!! My guess is that the guys who had her before me took the springs out for more horsepower. The farther I get into restoring her, the more I see they weren't very nice to her!! Thanks again guys!!
I'm truly glad this thread will be of use to all of you , I happened to be in the position of having one I didn't have a use for and figured a thread with pictures of all the parts would take some of the mystery of what's going on in there away . Now , Unfortunately , I as the thread's creator have no more real information to add and so I Thank the folks who have added additional info here and I encourage anyone with something to add to feel free to post it up , the more pictures & procedures that can be collected here the better .
input housing to output shaft seal (#636 in parts diagram)
white hard plastic (earlier model output shaft), white hard plastic after being soaked in red ATF for 20 years, brown rubber seal (later model output shaft).
Ok , next up are 3 accumulator assemblies . I find reference on line to "1-2" and "3-4" accumulator but no identification of which is which . Also , what the third one is for . The third one that has no housing is located under the valve body separator plate and it's housing is actually the transmission case .
Can any 700R4 savvy folks further identify these three accumulators ?
Can all three of these accumulators be services by just pulling the pan or does it require pulling the transmission and disassembly? Meaning DYI?
Man great information and effort on your part I am really impressed and thankful for your efforts. I however have limited information on parts as I am still learning myself due to purchasing a vehicle that unknown to be had been switched from a 4l60e to a 700r4 I had to say I like the way it goes but unfortunately I am at a point of unknown milage on the transmission and looking for all the information I can get. I am extremely thankful best regards

did you rebuild the replacements yourself (the theme of this thread), or buy it from a premium trans builder, or at the other end of the extreme, straight from the wrecking yard into your car (tranny version of russian roulette)?
(footnote: not that kind of tranny)
or is your car one of those twin-turbo or blown 672 big blocks?
actually, just an edgy way of asking for more deets.
Just for the sheer fun of it , and for the fact that I've never seen every component of one of these transmissions myself , I decided to take a high mileage but still functional 700R4 totally apart and take pictures of every component with a standard sized BIC lighter in each photo for size scale . I am hoping this thread will serve as reference for anyone who is wondering or needs to know exactly what each component looks like .
