700r4 won't shift into any gears...

Basically my 89 Iroc sat around for a bit unused. A few months back I decided to put it back on the road. All was well for 2 or 3 days until the 4th day on my way home from work. I would then begin to randomly act as if it had been shifted into neutral, no slipping or anything just nothing at all. I was able to get it to move again by shifting into park, shutting the car off and restarting it. After shifting back into gear it would start off just fine, shift once or twice and once again do the same thing. I got it towed home and let it sit until I had time to investigate. It starts and runs fine but does nothing when shifted into any gear including park or any forward gear. Fluid level is fine, shift cable is fine, and tv cable is adjusted correctly... any ideas?

its possible the TC bolts all fell out.or the TC is dead.either way you need a trans shop to look into it. good luck

I don't think any bolts have come loose. If they had it would not have started out intermittent. You should have the line pressure tested.

You will need to take it somewhere and have it looked at. The 700R4 is a bit on the complex side, you could have any number of things wrong. Could be a simple thing, however, it could need an internal seal replaced. Your best bet would be to have it looked at. This could be a good time to make some needed impovements to your aging 700R4.

The 700R4 relies on fluid pressure to function, if there are any clogs in the system it can cause shift issues and excessive wear.

Re: 700r4 won't shift into any gears...

While it is an old trans and I have no idea of its history, it worked just fine then suddenly lost all gears including reverse, while I am an ase certified master tech auto tranny diag has never been my strong point, most dealers, private shops, and chains would simply prefer to r + r entire units as soon as there's any sort of internal issue involved. The sad part the majority of the time it would be faster and just as effective to simply fix the issue, for an example back in 02 while working at a mopar dealer I had a jeep wrangler come in with a defective carrier bearing. It was under warranty so knowing it was covered I pulled it apart, pressed the defective bearing off, and went to the parts department for a new one after thoroughly inspecting and cleaning the rest of assembly... the parts guys all looked at me like I was asking for crack..(this was my first week working at a dealership) after being yelled at for not following proper warranty procedures they had me reassemble it with the old bearing, refill with the old gear lube, and park it back in the lot for a week until the "new" rear came in.. back to my issue, when I bought this car it had a trans that wouldn't shift past second gear, it basically operated as if the shifter was in the 2 position, instead of looking into it, I swapped in this spare I had around since I was already replacing the factory LB9 with 115k on the clock with a slightly beefed up 4 bolt main roller cammed 350... Now I need to sell the car due to lack of space and need of funds to finish my other projects, may end up rebuilding original trans and engine, repaint and sell..
